99 Disguises
Chapter 1
My sister, Susan, was the only one who could
soothe Quintin’s trauma, so I was forced to
impersonate her for five years.
It was my ninety–ninth time dressing up as
her and heading to Quintin’s place when I
overheard him talking to his friend.
“Quintin, it’s been five years since Susan
died, right? This is like, the ninety–ninth time
you’ve had Sarah pretend to be her.”
“Sarah’s such a fool. She spent years
studying law enforcement, and she still hasn’t
figured out you’re faking it.”

There was silence for a moment, then
Quintin’s cold voice cut through the air.
“Ninety–nine times. So, you’re starting to feel
sorry for her?”
Another voice responded.
“Nah, it’s just… you guys grew up together.
Plus, she’s Susan’s sister. You’re pretty
ruthless, man.”
“So what? It’s her punishment.”
“The assignment was supposed to be hers. If
she hadn’t backed out, Susan wouldn’t have
died!”
It turned out he’d always secretly wished I
had been the one who died.
I bitterly smiled at myself, dressed as my
sister.
Sis, you win. I give up.
I dialed a number.
“Lieutenant, assign that mission to me. I can
く
leave in three days.”
I’d just hung up when Quintin called.
“Sarah, where are you? Quintin’s biting his
lip!”
“Hurry, I can’t control him anymore!”
That was the other voice, Jake, Quintin’s best
friend.
I slowly moved the phone away from my ear,
waiting for him to finish yelling before
replying calmly.
“I’m at the door. I’m almost there.”
“Keep an eye on him. Don’t let him hurt
himself.”
Quintin, let me play this one last scene with
you.
Ninety–nine times ends here. Our connection
<
is wiped clean.
I waited outside a little longer, until my
emotions calmed.
I knocked on the door, acting just as anxious
as usual.
The door swung open, and Jake yanked me
inside.
Quintin was bound with ropes, his face
contorted in pain, his feet kicking wildly. His
clothes were soaked with sweat, torn in
places, revealing cuts from the ropes.
I quickly untied him and hugged him tightly.
