At the hospital, I watched as my father’s body was covered with a white sheet.
Then I followed the funeral home personnel as they transferred his body from the hospital to the crematorium.
It wasn’t until I stood before my father’s gravestone that I finally had a moment to breathe.
The pack of werewolves came to bid farewell to my father, and some of my friends asked, “Why isn’t Zane here?”
“It’s one thing to take time off work, but how could he skip the elder Alpha’s funeral? This is his father–in–law, after all! Not to mention, he’s supposed to inherit the Alpha position…”
But when they saw my face turn grim, they quickly withdrew their words.

Yes, why didn’t Zane come?
As my father’s chosen successor, he should have been here to steady the pack.
As my husband, he had even more reason to attend the funeral.
But he simply didn’t show up…
I numbly made another phone call, only to hear the line busy again.
A good friend noticed my vulnerability, embraced me, and consoled me:
“Maybe Zane has something important going on!”
I comforted myself, thinking that Zane might really be busy.

When I finished handling everything and checked my phone messages, I saw a recent post on Facebook by Celeste featuring Zane.
In the group photo were their college friends and some members from Celeste’s Pack.
Celeste was standing very close to Zane, looking very much like a couple.
The caption read: “Spent my birthday with my beloved Zane!”
So, his supposed important business was celebrating Celeste’s birthday.
