Chapter 9
Zane was feeling really down and shot her a glare.
“Don’t blame me for being honest, anyone would be jealous with how close you are to Celeste, right?”
“I’m not!”
Zane tried to argue, but his female colleague cut him off directly.
“Haha, you say you’re not, but you’re with Celeste every day. People who don’t know better might think you two are the real couple.”
“Marlowe is just polite enough not to call you out on it in public.”

“If my husband treated me like that, I would’ve left ages ago.”
“Zane, if you like Celeste, just divorce Marlowe. Don’t treat our dear Alpha’s daughter like that; she’s a good girl who works hard for the pack.”
Zane shuddered, seemingly shaken by her words.
“No, I don’t like Celeste!”
His female colleague laughed, “I can’t tell.”
“You didn’t even come back for the funeral, staying with Celeste instead. Is that what you call not liking her?”
Her sharp words pierced right through Zane’s heart.

His face turned pale, even his lips trembling.
Mentor, father, old Alpha–no matter the relationship, this sudden loss was a lifelong pain for him.
At this moment, Zane seemed to understand how I felt.
His heart felt as if it had been pierced by a small knife.
His whole being felt empty, tinged with a bittersweet sadness.
During my rounds, my phone wouldn’t stop buzzing.
It must’ve been Zane texting me because I wasn’t replying.

[Marlowe, I’m sorry, I was wrong. Could you give me another chance to make it right?]
[I’ll still make breakfast for you tomorrow.]
[Don’t leave so quickly after work tonight. Wait for me, I’ll give you a ride home.]
[I heard you have a surgery today, don’t be too nervous, just relax.]
He seemed to have reverted to our whirlwind romance phase.
The constant concern kept pouring in.
But I was only annoyed that I had forgotten to block his number!
I lifted my hand and knocked on my head.
Then I decisively added his number to the

blacklist.
Zane didn’t sign the divorce agreement.
He came to the hospital with the agreement in hand, pulled me into the stairwell, and then tore it up in front of me.
“Why did you block me? Why aren’t you replying to my messages?”
He was fuming, as though I had done something unforgivable.
I was about to speak when he interrupted
me:
“And who was the man who dropped you off that night?”

I thought for a moment–it was probably my cousin. It was his first time visiting my pack, and before that, not even at our wedding had Zane ever met him.
But I couldn’t be bothered to explain.
“Excuse me, what’s the issue? Didn’t you also ignore my messages in the past?”
I lowered my head and scoffed.
“Let’s not even mention that we’re already divorced. Didn’t you also spend all that time with Celeste?”
I smiled lightly, furrowing my brows as I looked at him.
“If you think there’s nothing wrong with you and Celeste, what right do you have to talk about me?”

“If you didn’t like responding to my messages, why force me to respond to yours?”
I pushed him away. “Zane, you can’t have double standards like this.”
I glanced at the shredded divorce agreement on the floor.
“Go ahead, tear it up. It can always be redone.”
I didn’t understand why he was throwing such a tantrum.
He never truly loved me. Why couldn’t we just part ways in peace?
“No, I will never divorce you! As long as I don’t agree, we won’t get divorced!”

He laughed at me in that despicable way.
“It doesn’t matter. Even if you don’t agree, I’l still divorce you on my own!”
Seeing the unwavering determination in my eyes, Zane’s brows furrowed.
“Marlowe, I was wrong, alright? I didn’t understand these things before. I love you, I won’t divorce you.”
I was utterly confused.
Was this really necessary?
After I left, Zane collapsed weakly onto the floor.
His mind replayed every small moment from the past–every little thing I did for him.

He let Celeste sit in the passenger seat while I clearly cared, but he ignored it.
He shared his daily life with Celeste, and again, I cared, but he ignored it.
Now that I was getting into another man’s car, he started to get jealous.
Now that I wasn’t responding to his affections, he started to feel sad.
Zane let out a bitter laugh.
It felt like his heart was being crawled over by ants, a sour and uncomfortable feeling overwhelming him.
It hit him then–he had truly wronged me.
