Heartbeat
Chapter 1
My sister, Brittany, was head–over–heels for
Blake, the golden boy of the city’s elite.
To make something happen, she went as far
as slipping something into his drink at a fancy
party.
I didn’t try to stop her; instead, I actually
handed her the spiked drink.
I even booked a penthouse suite for them.
Last time, I tried to talk her out of it, saying
the Montgomerys had too much power.
We couldn’t afford to mess with them.
That night, Blake ended up with some other girl, and they got engaged the next day.
Brittany acted like it didn’t bother her, but on the way home, she shoved me off the
overpass.
I died instantly, splattered across the highway
by a semi–truck.
Before I went, she screamed that I’d ruined
her chance to marry into money.
I blinked, and I was back at the party.
This time, I was going to watch her burn!
As Blake downed the drink, I saw Brittany’s face from across the room, lit up with
scheming glee.
<
Two minutes later, the drug kicked in.
Blake’s face flushed a weird shade of red.
His bodyguards immediately rushed to his
side, escorting him upstairs.
I gave Brittany an “okay” sign and slipped her
the key card.
I started to get out of there, but she grabbed
my arm.
She hissed, “Don’t think I don’t know what
you’re up to! You’re not going anywhere until
this is done!”
“Stay by the door and keep watch! If Blake’s people see you, remember what you should
and shouldn’t say!”
r
She assumed I’d try to stop her like I did
before.
Instead, I pulled my arm away.
I glanced at the bodyguards who had already
noticed her.
Then, I smiled sweetly.
“Relax, you’re my sister. Who else would I
help?”
“Just remember your little sis when you’re
Mrs. Montgomery.”
She didn’t seem to catch the sarcasm.
She just tossed her head and said, “Good girl.
Once I’m married, I’ll set you up with a driver
く
or something. It’ll keep you in avocado toast
for life!”
“Now, shut your trap once you get up there,
and if anyone asks, you’re just a server
waiting for instructions from Blake. Mess this
up, and you’ll regret it!”
She glared at me, grabbed my wrist, and
dragged me upstairs with her.
The guards stood watch, and Brittany
pretended she was delivering water.
As soon as she was in the door, there was a
loud thud.
I hid down the hall, watching the room.
Before I knew it, Brittany was being dragged
out, unconscious.
