“Get out of here! Get out of our faces!”
Mom’s eyes watered with joy.
“I made the right choice! Tonight, we’re
moving into a mansion!”
Dad laughed and held up the test.
“I never imagined that the Montgomerys
would want to be with us! Now, we’re top
class!”
“Dear, what should I wear to my daughter’s
wedding? Should I send our grandchild
L
something special?”
I packed my bags.
On the way out, I walked behind them.
The neighbors were at their door.
“You must feel so blessed! I saw the news
online. I would pass out!”
“You two look amazing! Good news makes
you look so young!”
“I should’ve told my daughter to try! I thought
Blake was scary, but it seems easy.”
I almost threw up.
Mom and Dad talked about how they’d invite
L
everyone to the wedding.
A few police cars pulled up and parked.
The officer stepped out and said, “Is Brittany
here? She’s charged with spreading lies and
using drugs. Please come with us.”
Chapter 2
The envious whispers stopped dead.
The neighbors all looked at each other, then
took a step back, keeping their distance like
they were afraid it would rub off on them.
My parents panicked, grabbing at Brittany’s
sleeves.
“Honey, what’s going on? Who called the
cops? Didn’t Blake invite you on a date? This
<
has to be a mistake, right?”
Brittany’s smug face froze, but the panic in
her eyes quickly turned into her usual “I’m
better than you” look.
She lifted her chin and said, “I’m Brittany. You
guys have the wrong person. What rumors?
It’s nothing. I’m going to be Blake
Montgomery’s wife, his fiancée. You know the
Montgomerys? Montgomery Group!”
“Go find whoever made this false report. I
have a date with my fiancé, and ten cops
can’t make up for the time you’re wasting!”
I stood back, shaking my head at her
audacity.
“Seriously, Brittany, I don’t think Blake ever
<
said he wanted to marry you, did he? So isn’t
that just a rumor?”
Then, I turned to the cops.
“You got the right person. Take her away.”
Brittany was furious.
Π
Hearing me, the neighbors started whispering
too.
“So, she’s a liar? I knew it. How would
someone like Blake be interested in her? How
crazy.”
“Calling him her fiancé? She should be
ashamed, and she’s not even engaged with
him. In ancient China, she would be in a pig
cage in the river!”
“Maybe she’s been sneaking into Blake’s bed
for a long time now? I heard he was drugged
a few weeks ago. Bet she did it! Acts so prim
and proper, but she’s just desperate…
“What kind of parents teach their daughter to
do something like this? Her mom and dad
don’t seem so great either. Stay away from
them, or Blake might make them regret it.
Mom and Dad were red–faced with anger.
Brittany charged at me and slapped me hard
across the face.
“Bitch! I knew you were jealous of me! You
called the cops, didn’t you?”
“That’s why you went to your room! I thought
you actually wanted to leave. You stabbed me
in the back!”
“You can’t get a rich guy, so you’re trying to
bring me down? I’m gonna kill you!”
I didn’t have time to react and ended up with
a stinging cheek.
My parents didn’t even try to stop her. They
just glared at me with pure hatred!
“Worthless freeloader! Bringing us down with
you! We should have just left you wherever
we found you!”
Realizing what she’d said, Mom quickly
covered her mouth.
Dad kicked me hard in the back.
<
“Useless! What are you waiting for? Get the
charges dropped and get the cops out of
here!”
“You think I won’t take your legs if Blake is
angry, so you better hurry!”
