I was her boyfriend, but she was putting me down to prop up Ethan.
It was pathetic!
I hid my anger and smiled. “I’m just thinking
about the patient. What if Ethan messes up and she dies?”
Ethan frowned.
“Come on, Leo, I graduated from med school.
too, you know.”
Ashley rolled her eyes. “Stop bullying him just
because you’ve been doing this longer!”
“If you’re so worried, go help some other
patients!”
The nurse was on their side too. “Let Ethan
try, Dr. Lewis. Ashley’s here, so it’ll be fine.”
Everyone in the hospital liked Ashley.
She said jump, they asked how high.
Plus, she was pretty and nice, so I wasn’t
く
surprised they all sided with her.
“Fine,” I said, nodding.
I helped the other patients.
Ethan grinned at me. “You should try harder
instead of playing games.
“How come you’re still just a regular doctor?”
“Ethan, come here,” Ashley interrupted, “Don’t
listen to him. Let’s do the chest tap.”
She told Ethan how to hold the needle and
where to put it. Then she said, “You’re
nothing like him. You’ll be better in no time!”
“Leo will always be a resident.”
<
I didn’t react when Ashley insulted me.
This was the woman who was in my class in
college, my girlfriend for three years, and
maybe even my future wife. Now, she wanted
to tear me down.
I always wondered what Ethan had that I
didn’t.
But then, I remembered how she always
brought up Ethan, the cute little
underclassman.
She would smile when she talked about him.
When Ethan came to our hospital, she was all
over him.
I told myself she was just being nice.
But, she never loved me, so why would she
care about how I felt?
I pretended to rest, and hid my phone so the
camera could see what was going on.
The pileup blocked the road.
As soon as we arrived, there was another
crash, so the cops were trying to sort
everything out.
The other patients were okay, so the nurse
was cleaning them up.
No one noticed me filming.
Ashley and Ethan were all smiles, it was like
they were on a date.
Now I knew how Ethan could mess up so
badly last time.
They didn’t care about the patient.
I thought about Jennifer Moon.
She just had blood in her lungs, but Ethan
screwed it up.
I watched.
Ethan did the chest tap, got blood sprayed in
his face, and looked terrified.
Ashley patted his head. “It’s okay, Ethan! It
was an accident! Let me clean you up!”
The road was clear.
<
Ashley helped Ethan out of the ambulance,
then ordered me.
“Leo, get in, take the patient to the hospital!”
I nodded, put my phone away, and got in the
ambulance.
Back at the hospital.
Everyone was busy because of the crash.
It was almost ten before I could sit down to
order food.
That’s when someone put a lunchbox in front
of me.
“You’re busy today, Dr. Lewis. You must be
く
It was Sarah, one of the new interns this year.
Ashley took Ethan, and Sarah was assigned
to me. She had a cute face.
I opened the lunchbox, it was a full meal.
“Thanks,” I said, touched.
Sarah grinned. “I got it at the cafeteria this
afternoon. I knew you’d be too busy to eat.”
I was about to dig in.
When Ethan and Ashley walked in.
Ethan said, “Looks like Dr. Lewis has a
special someone getting him food when
everyone else is working on an empty
Г
He chuckled, saying loudly, “Sarah brings you
food all the time, you must be charming, a
student and a cold senior, how perfect!”
“Are you two, you know?”
Everyone stared.
They knew Ashley was my girlfriend.
Sarah blushed. “Stop making things up,
Ethan!”
“Dr. Lewis has been helping me, I just wanted
to help him.”
Ethan was being a jerk. “Who knows if you’re
being grateful, or just trying to get on his
good side?”
く
I waved my hand. “It’s okay, Sarah, ignore
him.”
“Some people live off drama, they think
everyone else is.”
“You!” Ethan’s face turned red.
Ashley frowned at me.
“Leo, why are you being so mean?”
“Maybe I learned it from someone,” I said,
“Just kidding, but I thought you liked jokes.”
He used to insult me like this all the time.
Then he would play the victim and say he was
just joking.
Now, Ethan was pissed.
He grabbed his head and stumbled, Ashley
caught him, looking worried. “Ethan, what’s
wrong?”
Then she glared at me.
“Ethan isn’t feeling well! Why would you do
that? Apologize!”
“It’s okay,” Ethan said, “I’m just tired. And I
have low blood sugar.”
Ashley grabbed my lunch.
“Ethan has low blood sugar. Give him your
food, you can get something else!”
I scoffed.
く
I wasn’t having it.
I grabbed the lunch and held it.
“Why should I? I haven’t eaten all night either.
Ashley, are you his girlfriend? Why are you
being so protective?”
Ashley’s frown deepened.
“Don’t be mean. I’m not like that with Ethan!
You’re used to working late, a newbie should
eat first!”
“Give me the food!”
