Everyone was saying Tiffany Sutton and Luke
Huntington were the perfect couple, about to
make it official.
Yeah, they were from the same world.
To Tiffany, I was just some nobody who
happened to save her life.
In three days, I had everything ready for my
trin abroad and contacted a school to prop

me for a few years of studying.
Tiffany was right. Without her, I never would
have had this life. So, we didn’t owe each
other anything.
Mr. Sutton had been good to me since I’d
come to New York and had given me a ton of
money to start over. Since I didn’t plan on
seeing him again, I wanted to buy him a little
gift.
I walked into a tie shop and saw Tiffany
helping Luke pick out a tie.
She was smiling, carefully adjusting it for him.
There was something undeniably intimate
about the way they looked at each other.
That’s when Tiffany spotted me.
Her smile vanished, and her brow furrowed in
annoyance as she approached me. “Are you
stalking me?”
My heart skipped a beat. I was about to
explain.
But Luke cut in, taking Tiffany’s hand. “So,
you’re Danny, the guy who saved Tiffany?”
Seeing them like that, I couldn’t stay calm.
My tone came out harsher than I intended.
“What if I am?”
“Danny, watch your mouth!”
Tiffany snapped at me.
く
I looked at her, a wry smile on my face. “Did I
say something wrong?”
Luke rushed to smooth things over, smiling
kindly, pulling at Tiffany’s sleeve, “It’s okay,
Tiffany. Why get upset over someone like
that?” He looked down at me with disdain.
“Danny, you’ve been living with the Suttons
for too long. You’re starting to forget who
you are.”
“Don’t forget, if you hadn’t saved Tiffany, you
wouldn’t even be allowed to speak to me.”
Everyone seemed to think saving Tiffany was
a privilege. Even Tiffany herself.
I scoffed and said, “If I could do it over, I
wouldn’t have saved her.”
L
“Danny!”
Tiffany’s face contorted with rage, her eyes
burning into me. “Say that again, I dare you!”
I looked at her, my eyes blurring with tears,
and whispered, “Tiffany, if I could, I wish I
never saved you.”
This time, she was silent, just staring at me
with a strange expression.
Finally, she stormed out.
Luke quickly followed after her but stopped
beside me, smiling, “Oh, by the way, I thought
you might want to know: Tiffany’s pregnant.”
く
Those words hit me like a punch in the gut. I
hadn’t realized that they’d be this far so soon.
Seeing my stunned expression, Luke smiled
with satisfaction and left.
The night before I left, Tiffany called out of
the blue, saying she wanted to talk.
I figured she wanted to tell me about the baby
or maybe their wedding plans.
But whatever it was, it didn’t matter
anymore…
When she arrived, she saw my suitcase by the
door and paused, confused. “Where are you
going?”
I stared at the suitcases and lied for the first
time.
“Remember Mrs. Peterson who lived next
door? She’s sick and wants me to visit.”
“When are you leaving?” Tiffany asked
quickly.
I hesitated, lying again, “Tomorrow night.”
Tiffany nodded, “Mrs. Peterson was always so
nice to me. I’ll come with you tomorrow
night.”
I didn’t answer.
We stood in silence, the atmosphere thick
and strange.

Finally, Tiffany broke the tension. She looked
at me hesitantly, then pulled out a velvet box.
Inside was a huge diamond ring.
My heart skipped a beat. I still couldn’t help
but feel bitter that she and Luke were really
getting married.
