He always said the same thing:
“Sarah has been through a lot, can’t you have
some sympathy?”
“You got to marry me! Do you have to own
every piece of me?”
Those memories had been painful, but now
they were just annoying.
I opened my eyes and looked out at the
く
ocean, waiting for death, or maybe, a new
beginning.
The glass broke in the crash.
The sharp glass missed me, somehow.
It was flying at my left side when it was swept
away by the ocean. I knew why.
Sarah had added me on Facebook. Her
signature was strange:
“I’m on your left side, close to your heart.”
Mark was fine in the crash, and Sarah died.
They had gone through with their love
promise.
<
I was a good swimmer, but I swallowed a lot
of water from the crash.
The pregnancy made it even harder. I couldn’t
reach the shore.
I woke up in a white hospital.
A nurse smiled at me.
“You’re not doing well, don’t try to get up! I’ll
get the doctor!”
She left and turned on the TV.
The news was covering the crash.
The reporter said, “No one was killed.”
What?
く
What am I?
I got up, but I was dizzy.
The doctor caught me.
“Are you okay? A fishing boat saved you. Do
you know your family’s number? I’ll call them.”
I said Mark’s phone number.
I didn’t want to call him, but he was my only
family.
The doctor looked at me sadly and put the
phone on speaker.
Mark’s voice answered, a little hoarse.
“Hello?”
<
I could hear a woman’s voice in the
background.
“Mark, my foot still hurts!”
Mark chuckled.
“You’re too sensitive. I’ll get the medicine.”
The doctor rolled his eyes.
“Are you Mark Carter? Your wife, Annie, is at
the Seaside Hospital.”
I heard Sarah scream, then something fell,
and then Mark asked, “The plane crashed,
there was an explosion, but you’re telling me
Annie’s alive?”
“Who are you, what do you want?”
<
Chapter 2
With the doctor giving me the stink eye, I
calmly took the phone and said, “He’s the
doctor who saved my life.”
“Mark, am I dead? Are you bummed out?”
Mark, who was all hot and bothered a minute
ago, suddenly choked. He lowered his voice,
sounding nervous.
“Annie, don’t tell anyone you’re okay.
“I… I need a favor. I’ll come see you later.”
And then he hung up.
The doctor and nurse were staring at me,
speechless. Then they both pointed to the TV.
<
“Mark? That’s the Mark? The pilot from the
crash?”
“How could he leave his pregnant wife on a
plane that’s going down? And he told the
rescue team that everyone got out safe?”
Yeah, how could he?
My husband didn’t just take the last
parachute. He sealed my fate!
I looked down, feeling like crap. My hands
were clenched, but I didn’t know what to say.
Seeing I was upset, the nurse clammed up
and closed the door.
I buried my face in the sheets and finally lost
- it.
<
Mark didn’t show that afternoon, but Brenda,
the flight attendant who was such a jerk to
me on the plane, did.
She came in and looked at me, all pale and
worn out. She seemed a little embarrassed,
but she walked over and dumped a bunch of
stuff on the bedside table.
“Annie, Mark’s busy right now. He asked me
to check on you.”
