I gave a weak smile, but I didn’t even look up.
“Too busy hanging out with Sarah, right?”
“So, in your crew’s eyes, me, the pregnant
woman who gave up a parachute and lost her
baby in the crash, I’m still not as good as that
ex–employee?”
く
Brenda kept her head down, not meeting my
eyes.
After a minute, she said quietly, “Annie, you
know Mark. Ever since he became captain,
I’ve been his head flight attendant. I see him.
like a little brother.”
“Now, he… he messed up big time, hiding the
fact that you died…”
“Because Sarah wants to come back to the
crew. If they find out she was on the plane
illegally, then…”
She trailed off.
I looked up at her.
“You know Mark brought someone on the
<
plane that wasn’t authorized. You know that I
was hurt.”
“But you’re coming to me, asking me to
pretend nothing happened?”
This proud woman, who always sided with
Sarah over me, listened to me without saying
anything, her head bowed.
She didn’t talk, so I closed my eyes.
Brenda was a powerful person. She was
Sarah and Mark’s protector.
After Sarah came back from her breakup
overseas, Mark was always finding excuses to
go out.
We fought a lot. Sometimes he was annoyed
and blamed it on Brenda.
“I’m with Brenda.”
“Brenda asked us to hang out. I can’t say no.”
“It’s not just the two of us. Brenda will be
there. She’s always fair.”
I laughed.
“You know, when Mark was seeing Sarah, he
always told me you were there too.”
“He said you were fair, and I didn’t have to
worry.”
Her eyes teared up.
“Annie, I’m sorry. I was just…”
く
She didn’t finish.
Just then, my phone rang.
I tried to reach for it, but my phone was gone.
Brenda sighed. Thanking the phone for
breaking the tension.
She answered the phone, and the smile
dropped off her face.
I knew it was Mark.
Brenda answered the call.
Mark’s excited voice came over the line.
“Brenda, how’s it going? Did she agree?”

“Sarah’s application has already been sent.
This is a sensitive time.”
Brenda snapped.
“Mark, she’s your wife. She’s in the hospital
because of Sarah. You haven’t asked her a
thing!”
Mark cut her off.
“She’s not dead. Sarah said that Annie was
lucky to have been saved, didn’t she? Most
importantly, we have to get Sarah back.”
Brenda was shaking with anger.
Mark continued. “Just tell Annie everything
will be fine. Then we’ll be the airport crew

again!”
“You two are like my younger siblings. You
make me happy.”
Brenda cursed.
“Mark, are you even human?
“Your wife enabled you two, and now she’s in
the hospital. She almost died. Don’t you have
anything to say to her?”
Sarah screamed.
“Brenda, you’re yelling. I wanted to die with
Mark, but she made us take the parachute.”
Brenda interrupted.
“Enough, I’m done. I helped you for way too
long.”
Brenda looked at me on the bed. She bowed.
“I’m sorry. I’ll report everything.”
She walked away.
I fell back onto my pillow.
I wanted to go to sleep, but my door burst
open.
Mark had arrived with Sarah.
I didn’t want to fight. I closed my eyes.
Sarah cried.
<
“Annie, what did I ever do to you? Why are
you trying to ruin my career?”
