Chapter 14
“What?” Mark looked confused, his head spinning. “If you wanted to give it to me, why did you say those things? You wanted me to
grovel?”
I hesitated, then shook my head. “I wanted to
give you my kidney.
If I had agreed right away, everyone would have said I was forced into donating. And that
I am not willing to agree to. The love I have
for you is beyond that.
“I was going to the hospital to donate that
day. If you don’t believe me, ask the
housekeeper.‘
Mark didn’t care if I was being sincere or not.

He smiled. “Great! Let’s go now. We can do
the surgery today.”
I shook my head. “I wanted to do it then, but I
don’t want to now.”
Mark looked confused. “What? Did I do
something wrong? My mom had reporters with her to get to you. Don’t blame me.” I looked troubled. Under Mark’s prodding, I said, “Jessica came to see me yesterday.”
Mark didn’t understand. “What does that have
to do with anything?”
I continued. “I know why you don’t want
Jessica to give you a kidney. It’s because she’s pregnant with your baby, right?”
Since I’d already written the script, I didn’t
need to think. “I was angry. My heart was in
the wrong place. You’re a dog! That’s why I called the hospital and canceled your bill. It’s
not because I forgot I was paying. It’s
because I didn’t want you to die.”

I remembered that, two months after the surgery, I’d found out about the affair. It was winter, and Jessica had taken off her jacket, revealing her pregnant belly. She was at least
five months along.
So, Jessica would be three months pregnant
now.
Mark would have to believe me.
Mark protested. “She’s lying! I only love you. There’s no way I got her pregnant. Don’t
believe her.”
“Are you worried that you found out she was pregnant? No, that’s not right. It can’t be real. You’re just guessing.”
I don’t blame Mark for saying this, the plan
was from Jessica.
Jessica was the one who planned all of it,
how could she screw it up herself?
