Chapter 16
Mark and Carol didn’t bother me again.
Two months later, they had a wedding.
I was invited. Jessica wore a wedding dress, looking blissfully happy. She smirked. “Mark has decided to stop dialysis and spend his remaining time with our child.”
“I never thought you were the one to say you weren’t donating. He was going to sign a contract, and then you wanted to donate to the hospital so it could all work out. I am so
glad that Mark realized that all you wanted
was him!”
I narrowed my eyes.
When did I beg Mark to let me donate?
I glanced at Mark, making a point to show
that I could do the right thing. Mark and Carol
looked nervous. Carol grabbed my arm,
stopping me from speaking.
Mark looked at me and said, “Yeah, I only
want to be with Jessica. That’s how life is.
You almost have to die to know what’s best.”
“I invited you to the wedding to let you get
over me. Don’t bother me, or Jessica.” Carol added, “I want you to realize that Jessica is who he chose and who he will
always choose. Once Mark is gone, I’m giving
all my money to Jessica. It’s not much, but it’s something for her.”
The three of them looked content. I smiled
and offered my congratulations.
But I knew the truth.
Mark hadn’t given up. He would always want
the money.
