Chapter 3
Hearing me threaten to expose them, the
color drained from their faces, but Veronica
was oblivious.
Г
James was the first to react, and he went
right on the defensive.
“What are you talking about? When did I ever
talk to you? You’re making up stuff. Do you
have any proof?”
Veronica still didn’t notice my hints, and she
just impatiently furrowed her brow.
“You’re going to go out of your way to blame
the team before you leave?!”
I scoffed. “Blame the team? Which one of
these guys can actually be called a team
player?”
Hearing that, their faces turned even more
sour, and I continued.
く
“How is Andy, as a manager in the company,
able to afford a sports car? It must take all
your funds just to live.”
Andy slammed his hand on the table, his face
twisted with rage.
“You… you liar! I’ve been with this company
since day one, and you just said that your
cyber security is so important for the success
وو
of the company.”
“How can you say that? I’ve poured my heart
and soul into this company for years. I get
what I deserve, and I have a clear
conscience.”
Louis coldly glared at me and remained
defiant.
r
Seeing how defensive they were, I laughed.
Veronica doesn’t know that if it weren’t for
me, the company would’ve been picked clean
years ago.
The little bits they’re skimming, they took
from a previous programmer’s mistakes.
I caught the bugs and squashed them.
She gets to sit in her CEO’s chair without a
care in the world, sign a few papers, and let
everyone else handle the rest.
The company’s always fighting fires, and
she’s just sitting there, ignoring it all!
Forget the last five years, just in the last six
く
months, rival companies have tried to hack us
more than once, but I stopped them.
I’ve submitted the reports, but she never pays
attention!
Veronica once told me I just needed to be a
figurehead at the company, but I pulled out all
the stops to write code for her, because I
promised her grandfather.
I’m paying him back. But her grandfather’s
health is failing, and he’s not involved
anymore, so Veronica dropped the act? She
thinks she runs the place now?
My fists clenched, and I said, looking directly
at Veronica,
“Veronica, I’m just asking you one thing: Are
you completely sure you want me gone?”
Veronica seemed surprised by my tone, and it
took her a moment to respond.
“Yes!”
Hearing that, I gave up trying to make her see
sense.
She’ll regret this.
The other managers started yelling for me to
leave, and Veronica made no effort to hide
her contempt.
“Kyle, just get out! The company doesn’t
need someone who gets paid for doing
nothing! And don’t go running to Grandpa. If
you do, I’ll never respect you again!”
