Chapter 8
“What?!”
Cody couldn’t believe it, and he started
shaking.
“I learned everything in class! How could it
fail?”
“Oh, really? Which class?”
I was just being sarcastic, but Cody blew up.
“Shut up! What class is it to you?! Are you
mocking me now?!”
I laughed. He probably took some random
online course and got a big head.
His company in the Bay Area was probably a
lie.
“What do we do?!” Veronica asked.
She runs a cybersecurity company, and
doesn’t know anything about what she’s
doing.
The old man was even more worried.
“…The firewall’s down?!”
The old man’s face was turning blue, so I
helped him sit down.
“Mr. Smith, don’t worry. The core files are still
secure. The hackers can’t get to them right
now.”
The old man grabbed my arm and finally
relaxed.
Veronica was ignoring us and kept urging
Cody.

“Cody, you have to save the company! If the
data gets leaked, we’re done!”
Cody opened his laptop, but the second it
turned on, he saw it was hacked.
The screen showed a taunting message and a
progress bar showing the data being leaked.
“What do I do?! I… I can’t handle this!”
Cody was terrified.
“It’s over, it’s all over.”
Seeing the data being stolen, Veronica knew
she was finished, she was in trouble. She was
at a loss for what to do.
She saw me standing there looking calm, and
grabbed me.
“Kyle! You know computers! You know how
to fix this, right?”
I knew how to fix it, but I didn’t move.
“Yeah, but I don’t work for you anymore,
remember? You fired me! I’m not part of your
company anymore!”
“You…”
Veronica looked shocked and forced herself
to stay calm.
“Can’t you just help me out this once?”
I held up six fingers and smirked.
“If you want me to do some private work, it
starts at six figures, and that’s just for an
entrance fee.”
She didn’t expect that. She was at a loss for
what to do, then looked at her grandfather.
The old man had stopped paying attention to
her. He caught her looking at him and glared.
“You expect Kyle to just help you?! He’s not a
regular employee! This isn’t just charity. Is
that really how you believe to be? Why should
he help?”
Veronica didn’t understand why the old man
suddenly respected me.
“…Grandpa, what are you talking about?”
The old man glared at her.
