I didn’t have time to laugh at Amber’s
misfortune.
I’d decided to quit and go to Leo’s firm.
I’d be coming in as a partner, and while he
was supporting me, I still had to prove myself.
I scheduled meetings with a few clients.
I wanted to keep control of the relationships
I’d built.
I was meeting with my biggest client, worth
fifty million.
I told my assistant to hold all calls.
As soon as I sat down, Amber showed up,
teary–eyed:
“Sue, it’s all my fault. Please forgive me!”
She spotted my client and pretended to be
surprised:
“Oh, am I interrupting something?”
“Get out!”
く
I snapped.
Amber, seeing my expression, said:
“Sue, I’m really sorry. Please don’t make me
go.”
Her act was pretty lame.
I smiled apologetically at my client.
“Sorry about that.”
Then I stood up, grabbed Amber, and
slammed her against the wall.
She cried out. I turned back to my client.
The commotion drew attention, and some
people started whispering.
“Sue told us not to bother her today. Amber’s
just asking for trouble.”
“She’s not trying to get yelled at, she’s trying
to sabotage Sue’s deal.”
With a flick of the wrist, I twisted her arm and
dragged her outside.
I kicked her out, slammed the door, and
locked it.
く
Taking a deep breath, I smiled at my client.
“Where were we?”
The meeting went smoothly, and my client,
who’d been unsure, changed his mind.
Before he left, he shook my hand.
“I didn’t know you were so capable in and out
of the court, Sue!”
I smiled, embarrassed.
“Lawyers deal with a lot of angry people and
often gets attacked.‘
“It was a pleasure.”

I tapped my fingers on the keyboard, finishing
up the work.
