I quit my job and focused on writing at
Ashley’s.
The truth was, my writing had made more
than enough to live on for a while.
I’d mentioned full–time writing to Mark once,
but he’d laughed at me.
“Don’t live in a fantasy, concentrate on work.”
My dreams were always childish to him.
Mark, of course, lectured me on the phone.
“How are you going to support yourself?”
“Ashley’s a bad influence!”

I blocked him.
My mom called too, but I hung up.
My mom and I never had a great relationship.
She wanted me to be successful, just like
Mark.
She always told me, “You should be more like
Mark. You need to listen to him.”
She said that dating Mark was my only hope,
as I’d never find someone better.
I was raised by a single mom, who raised me.
So, I was always compliant.
But this time, I wanted to do things my way.
