Cole’s place was bigger than I thought.
He grabbed a pair of men’s slippers, tripping
over himself as he did.
“These might be too big, but they’re the only
new ones.‘
I laughed. “Don’t worry.”
“I try to keep it clean, but it might be a little
messy.”
He was acting like the guest.
I threw myself on the couch. “I can’t cook, so

He started soaking the gauze.

He took his time.
After half an hour, he finished bandaging it.
“Don’t get it wet.”
“How am I supposed to shower?”
“You don’t have to for a day.” He paused. “I
won’t mind.”
“You better not.”

“Good. Now go make dinner.”
He smiled and nodded.
I felt comfortable around Cole.
An hour later, he served up four dishes: sweet
and sour pork, garlic shrimp, steamed fish,
and cucumber salad.
He handed me chopsticks.
“Try it.”
After the first few bites, I gave him a thumbs-

It tasted amazing.
