But almost simultaneously, a security guard’s
hand clamped over my mouth, choking me.
As they threw me into the security car, I banged on the window.
Hoping David would notice me.
But the roar of the engine was deafening, and
I could only watch as hope faded.
The car screeched to a halt in front of the
Jason house. Jason gallantly shielded Sarah
with his hand as he opened the car door,
while Alex roughly dragged me out.
He grabbed the things I had packed from the doorway and hurled them at me.

The three of them stood under an umbrella,
looking down at me, drenched and disheveled.
Alex sneered.
“What, weren’t you running away? You even
packed your bags! I’ll show you where you
can go without us!”
I silently picked up my damaged equipment as
Jason’s voice boomed down.
“Apologize to Sarah now, and you can still be
our Mrs. Jason!”
I sifted through the soaked equipment; none
of it was usable.

What can’t be saved, should be discarded.
A screeching brake pierced the air, and a
warm coat draped over my shoulders.
David held an umbrella over me, his face a
coldness I’d never seen.
“You said my wife… is your Mrs. Jason?”
The two brothers instantly left Sarah’s side
and strode towards David, glaring.
They spoke in unison.
“You haven’t come to see us for days, just to mess around with this random guy?! You’re calling him your husband now? Are you that desperate for a man?”

David rarely made public appearances, and
his unknown status became Jason’s
ammunition.
Jason grabbed my shoulder, his usual gentle
demeanor replaced by rage.
“I’m your fiancé! Emily, cheating before the wedding, and so brazenly?!”
I slapped him hard across the face.
Jason turned his head, momentarily stunned.
David glanced at Sarah with a mocking look.
“Keeping a mistress and demanding fidelity, is this how the Jasons teach you to treat a
woman?!”
L
Silence.
As the two umbrellas walked away, a
contorted expression flashed across Sarah’s
face, unnoticed by the brothers.
She whimpered, clinging to Alex under his
umbrella, pressing against his chest.
“Alex, my ankle hurts so much.”
Surprisingly, no one responded.
The men who used to make me run three
miles for special medicine if she stubbed her
toe, now neither pushed her away nor
embraced her.
Jason and Alex only stared intently at me, as

But I remained calm.
Jason’s grip on my arm tightened. He gritted
his teeth.
“There’s nothing between us and Sarah,
Emily, don’t let him drive a wedge between
us!”
Sarah’s face paled.
“Jason, what are you saying, we clearly…”
“No! Emily…”
I cut Sarah off.
“Didn’t I already tell you? We broke up.”
L
Alex tried to grab my hand, his voice full of
anguish.
“What’s so good about that guy! Our farmily
raised you for over ten years! How dare you
leave!”
Did raising me cost so much? The money
they used to “raise” me was from my
grandmother’s regular payments.
I coughed, pointing to the ruined planning
tools on the ground.
“I have nothing to do with your family anymore. You just kicked me out.”
Their faces paled, and they stammered,
I simply took David’s arm and walked away.
Jason and Alex roared behind me.
“You’ll regret this! Emily!”
I didn’t look back, sheltered by David as we
left the Jason property.
