Chapter 1/
Hearing my parents stand their ground for me made me laugh.
My ex–mother–in–law, realizing she couldn’t convince me, switched tactics and started guilt–tripping. She went on about how much Heston had been thinking about me, saying he was so distracted he couldn’t even do his job properly.
“Oh, so he’ll magically be able to work if he just holds Wendolene in his arms?”
I rolled my eyes, not bothering to be polite.
I never forgot what she put me through.”
In the dead of winter, she made me cook a whole feast by myself, wash all the dishes in cold water, and do the entire family’s laundry. When I told her I wasn’t feeling well and needed to rest, she called me dramatic and lazy. The second I had a free moment, she’d start cursing and complaining around the place.
I put up with it all for Heston. Five years of its
me to bear w
with it.
Every time we went home for the holidays and she treated me like this, Heston would just tell me to
I was nothing more than a maid in that place–one that didn’t even get basic respect.
“The Quillians don’t welcome you. Don’t come back.”
My ex–mother-in–law clutched her thighs, wailing, but Dad still kicked her out.
Mom took my hand. “Yvie, are you okay? Looks like life at the Fitzhughs” place wasn’t easy for you. We’re never letting them in again.“%
I shook my head. “I’m fine, Mom. They’re just strangers to me now.”
I told my parents everything that happened today, and they burst into laughter.
Seeing that asshole and his mistress uffer was enough to make them happy.
When Falco got home and heard about the visit, his face darkened.
“So your ex, that piece of trash, still won’t give up? He’s even pulling the pity card now? Yvie, are you sure you don’t want me to deal with him?”
“Don’t make things worse.”
I didn’t trust him not to go overboard and get himself in trouble.!!
Maybe it was because I was working at VerdantCore Technologies now, but Heston finally lost his composure.X
The next day, while I was working in my office, a coworker came in with a bouquet, saying it was a delivery.!!
A beautifully wrapped bunch of lilies of the valley, with a small card attached.
[Hope you have a happy day!-Heston
With a blank expression, I tossed the card and unwrapped the flowers, splitting them among my coworkers.
I told them that if anyone ever saw flowers being delivered to me again, just pretend they didn’t exist.
That afternoon, the reception brought up a mango mini cake.
This time, there was no name on the box. I had no idea who sent it.
The bakery was famous, and these cakes were limited daily. You had to line up to get one.
‘Who else knows I love mango cake? It has to be Heston.
‘And who knew what he might’ve put in it?
Without hesitation, I threw it straight into the trash without even opening the box,
Not long after, Henrik, who was here to check on the marketing department, walked into my office. His eyes landed on the cake box in the trash, and his smile stiffened a little.
“Yvonne, I remember you’ve always loved mango cake. You don’t like this?”
I blinked in shock. “Wait… you sent it?“!
He nodded. “Yeah, I heard this one’s really popular with girls, so I thought you’d like it.”
I instantly picked the box out of the trash and set it on my desk. Thankfully, the cake was still intact.
“Sorry, I thought Heston sent it. I really love mango cake. Thank you.”
Feeling guilty, I avoided his gaze.
He’d been nice enough to buy me a cake, only to walk in and see it in the trash.
If I were him, I’d be mad.
But Henrik just shook his head, still good–natured. “It’s fine. As long as you like it.”
After he left, I opened the box and took a bite.!!
The rich mango flavor, the soft, milky cake–it was delicious.X
Henrik tasted masking if I nadat hain
