Chapter 2
Grandpa didn’t like extravagance, so his
funeral was simple, just as he wished.
After seeing off the last of the mourners, I
gently touched the inscription on his
tombstone, grief overwhelming me.
My parents died in a car accident when I was
young, and Grandpa raised me.
He was wonderful to me, giving me a
privileged life and showering me with love. He
even raised David, the grandson of his war
く
David and I grew up together and naturally
became a couple.
My only wish, like Grandpa’s, was for my
happiness.
To keep him happy, I tolerated David’s blatant
infidelity, even when he brought women
home.
I didn’t want Grandpa to know that my perfect
marriage was a sham, that his efforts to
support David were a mistake.
But now…
My heart ached. I suddenly heard sobbing
coming from the nearby woods.
L
This was Grandpa’s private mountain, only
family was allowed. Why would a woman be
crying here?
Confused, I walked towards the sound and
saw Amelia and David, their clothes.
disheveled.
They stopped kissing when they saw me.
Amelia quickly jumped off David, her face
pale.
“You’re crazy! Why are you spying on us?”
David hurriedly covered Amelia’s legs with his
jacket, his face full of annoyance.
“Linda, you’re stalking me? How desperate
are you?!”
I looked at them, feeling numb.
“This is my grandpa’s mountain.”
“You’re the ones trespassing on private
property. I wasn’t stalking you, David.”
A sneer spread across David’s face.
“Linda, if you weren’t stalking me, then what
were you doing? You schemed to marry me,
and now you’re pretending you don’t care?”
I laughed bitterly.
“David, I admit I loved you once, but I don’t
think that love was something shameful.”
“Besides, did I force you to go to the

courthouse to get our marriage license?”
I had nothing more to say. I stumbled back to Grandpa’s grave and bowed my head.
“Grandpa, I’m sorry. I can’t stay with David
like you wanted.”
A strong wind blew through the trees, swirling
the fallen leaves towards the path down the
mountain.
I followed the path down to the winding road
and saw David’s sports car parked next to
mine.
So, he knew I was here before him.
He did all of that just to avenge Amelia for
the slight she suffered at the party.

out to check, David and Amelia walked over:
Amelia was flushed, clinging to David. I
looked away as David approached me, his
face cold.
“Car trouble?”
“Never mind, I’ll give you a ride. You always
complained about your feet hurting when we
hiked this mountain…”
Before he could finish, Amelia squirmed on
his back.
“David, why are you taking her? Don’t you
remember what she did to me?”
David ignored her and opened the back door

I shook my head and stepped back.
Amelia smirked, and David’s face hardened.
“Linda, don’t be difficult. If you don’t want a
ride, walk down. No one’s begging you.”
I nodded and started walking down the path
we had walked together so many times.
David and Amelia drove slowly behind me,
honking the horn, as if mocking my
helplessness.
I ignored them, but David suddenly
accelerated, cutting me off. He stumbled out
of the car, his face pale.
