Pov Liberty

I stared down at my hands covered in blood, my whole body cold and numb from the wound in my side. “Mum“, I cried out but my voice was just a whisper.

I stumbled forward, careful not to trip on the body on the floor I reached for the door knob. The screams and cries from the pack were deafening.

I hadn’t shifted yet because I was only 13, my wolf hadn’t come so I couldn’t heal myself. I could feel my body feel weak as I pushed through the people running from the town hall.

I tried calling again and again but my cries fell silent through the noise. I had been caught in the war of our packs, the Jenkins and the Drakos.

As the darkness surrounded me and I started to feel dizzy I heard the scream of my mother giving a pang of hope that I would survive, “Liberty“, I heard her cry.

I reached for her as my body slumped to the ground and the noise that was deafening was now silent around me, only the sobs of my mother could be heard.

As she raced to my side and tried to heal me from her wolf I weakened her, I made her vulnerable as she gave me life. I opened my eyes as my surroundings became clear and I saw him, the Alpha Drakos pull my mother from me.

I reached for her but she screamed at me to run, as she turned to fight the Alpha off her.

My father ran through the town and he mindlinked me, “Run Liberty run“, he yelled.

My body was still weak as I scrambled to my feet and looked back at my mother who shone brightly amongst the rest, her silver wolf glistening in the light.

Her weakness could be seen and her pain could be felt, as my father charged through the people his wolf magnificent, silver and black with flecks of blue that shone through his fur in the moonlight.

I was in awe of my fathers wolf as he jumped in the air and extended his claws as he made contact with the Alphas body, My mother staggered backwards.

I turned and I ran as fast as I could go, with my legs still weak and my mind still cloudy, my tears stinging my eyes as I left my parents to fight for my freedom behind me. My anger surged my body and it was then that I heard my father howl, I fell to my knees at the sound of his cries.

The howl was full of pain and sorrow and I knew then that she had gone. I felt the heaviness of the despair that flooded through the mindlink, the sobs that shuddered my body were uncontrollable.

My father had lost his mate and I had lost my mother.

“Liberty, Wake up“, Jess shouted, stirring me from my sleep.

She wiped my tears that had come during my dream and her sympathetic look was too much for me to bear. “Go away“, I muttered.

I turned on my side pulling the covers over me and hiding from the world allowing this darkness to swallow me. This grief that held tight in my chest to suffocate me, I was done with the world forever cursed to lose the ones I loved around me.

“The pack is going for a run, It will be good for you to come. You can make some new friends and find somewhere to belong,” Jess said while rubbing my arm. “Is your brother going to be there?“I snapped from under the duvet.

Hesitation before she answered, “I honestly don’t know, He hasn’t come back yet.”

Worry filled me but I shook it off, her brother was a monster, his eyes full of anger etched in my mind as he lunged for me at the lake. I can’t worry about his whereabouts, I won’t worry he wasn’t my problem.

As if Jess knew I was struggling internally she patted my arm and laid down beside me, her warmth killing the coldness that ran through my body, “You’re a Drakos, your father killed my mother“, I hissed.

She sighed and then she said something that shocked me, “My brother killed my father but I still love him”.

My eyes grew wide, the tremble of my fear engulfed me, he was capable of killing his father!, he could kilt me.

“Are you letting your mind wander Lib? Because there are reasons. You wouldn’t understand as you are not ready to listen☐☐..(She paused)…though I am really here, Drakos or not, I like your Liberty there’s something special about you“, she whispered.

My mother always said I was special. She had told me all the time the moon goddess had great plans for me. I never believed her, even more so when the great plan was without my mother in it.

“Come to the run, I want you to meet some people“, Jess pleaded.

I knew she wasn’t going to go away and just leave me alone so I nodded under the duvet and mumbled, “Yes okay I will go with you“.

I wanted to ask why her brother wasn’t back, Carissa had started pacing in my mind and I couldn‘;t shake her irritation off.

We made our way outside and I faced Beta Milo again who glanced at me and nodded and walked away.

Jess grabbed my arm, “That is Milo, His bark is worse than his bite though and he would do anything to protect his pack. That is why he is the best beta my brother could ask for,” she said quietly in my ear.

“Look (as she pointed to three men) they are the lone wolves, they lost their mates in the war with the Jenkins so they basically patrol our borders and keep us safe,” she said with a smile.

Each word she said I listened to intently, making a mental note of who people were and nodding as she spoke.

“That is Elsie and Theo (she pointed to a young couple that sat on a bench under a tree). They have been dating for years but they turn 18 next month so they will know if they are true mates or not,” she said smiling.

A twinkle in her eye showed how much she cared for the couple and the excitement of talking about finding their mates meant that she hoped they found it together. “Who is this‘‘, said a woman walking towards us hand outstretched.

She wasn’t the prettiest but her bosoms were pushed up and her skirt was so short that it left nothing to the imagination. I didn’t feel a kind aura from her, in fact the look of disgust must be evident in my face as Jess yanked at my arm disturbing me from my thoughts.

“This is Liberty.. Liberty this is Lisa,” Jess introduced us. I noted that Jess didn’t like this woman either, her normal warm tone of her voice turned cold. “Hi“, I said, not wanting to show my distaste.

“Where is the Alpha, Jess?“Lisa said ignoring the chilly welcoming she got.

I thought to myself then that she must be used to that from Jess and it was quite normal. I frowned at the thought that Jess had instantly warmed to me but not her own pack member.

“Get out of your head, there are many reasons. It can’t be just because she is a Drakos,” Carissa said.

“Make friends not enemies,” I mumbled back to her.

Feeling Carissa nod with satisfaction I hadn’t realised they had all stopped talking and were staring at me. My uneasiness grew, what had I missed? “I don’t know where the Alpha is,” I said.

Jess looked at me puzzled and sighed then said,” Look Lása, Liberty is our guest at the packhouse maybe you should☐☐.,erm you know back off!.”

I took in her words but didn’t quite grasp what she was asking Lisa to back off from?

With that Lisa pulled me into a hug and whispered into my ear, “The Alpha is mine, back off.”

I stumbled back from Lisa and shook my head and said, “The Alpha is no more than just an Alpha to me Lisa. What he does isn’t up to me.”

I couldn’t help notice the pang I felt at my words as if I hurt myself saying it, this Alpha was dangerous and I didn’t want any part of that.

Lisa smiled and nodded and with that she walked off.

Jess grabbed me closer and and muttered about Lisa being a b**ch and spat at the ground.

I noticed smoke coming from the distance in the trees and I stopped and stared at it, when Jess had taken me around the village before I never saw a house there. “We can’t go there!“Jess said, pulling me to go with her.
