Chapter 5
A sharp sound echoed through the air. Garrett
covered his face, disbelieving. “Are your
crazy?”
I hugged Quincy tighter, my cheek against his
back, swaying his arm.
“This guy’s nuts. Can we go home?”
“Honey, say something.”
Since leaving the hospital, Quincy had been
reserved and polite, never this close.
After calling him “honey” twice, he tensed up.
Garrett was stunned.
“Fine, let’s go home.”
He turned, fiercely pulling me into his arms.
Molly started laughing.
She teased, “Already lovey–dovey before the
wedding! Don’t get too carried away.”
L
My other friends followed suit.
Only Garrett stood in the corner, his face
dark.
As Quincy and I left, Garrett stared intensely
at me, as if trying to see right through me.
Days later, Garrett announced he and Bailey
were together.
The public was in uproar.
Fans shipping them was one thing, but the
actual couple announcing it was another.
For someone of Garrett’s status to be with
his own artist, the news was explosive.
Speculation ran wild, wondering why Lin
Raina wasn’t causing a scene.
In reality, Garrett’s parents were already at
my house.
Mrs. Garrett forced a smile. “Our son is
immature. We’ve already reprimanded him.”
She held my hand. “Raina, only you are
worthy of being our daughter–in–law.”
“That actress…we’ll never let her into our
family.”
I calmly withdrew my hand. Even with my
memory loss, I remained unfazed.
“No, thank you, Mrs. Garrett. Let’s just call off
the engagement.”
“It’s not the feudal era anymore. We don’t
need to worry about social standing. I think
Garrett and Bailey are very well–suited.”
A perfect match made in hell.
Mrs. Garrett’s smile faltered. She continued
to plead.
“Raina, I know you liked Garrett in college.
He’s just upset about your breakup.”
“If he didn’t like you, why would he have
agreed to this marriage?”
As if his supposed affection for me was some
grand favor.
My mother intervened.
“Mrs. Garrett, I think we should stop here.”
<
“We’re not the type of family who sells their
daughters. We agreed to the engagement.
because we thought Raina wanted it.”
“We misunderstood. Let’s not make decisions
for our children.”
“Raina is getting married to Quincy next
month. They grew up together, and they’re
deeply in love.”
“Garrett is a good child, but he should find
someone else.”
Mrs. Garrett couldn’t press the issue further.
I went to the garden to swing.
I overheard Mrs. Garrett on the phone.
“You ungrateful son! You’ve killed me! You
have no brains!”
“Didn’t you agree to the engagement? What’s
going on with that actress?”
“Raina’s getting married to the second son of
the Qin family next month. It’s over. Don’t call
me Mom!”
Mrs. Garrett coldly ended the call.
