Sergeant Johnson followed David out

As if talking to me was a waste of his time

I was used to it

I locked the door and went back to bed

The next morning, I went to talk to David

about the application

Sarah was in his office

Only Sarah was in his office

She looked perfectly healthy, a mocking smile

on her face. She held a stack of letters

recognized

Anna, I didn’t know you were so forward

Writing love letters to David at such a young

age.”

It was the letters I’d written to David

He’d actually shown them to Sarah

Rage surged through me. I lunged for the

letters

Before I could touch her, Sarah fell to the

floor, scattering the letters

Г

David’s voice boomed from behind me

Sarah! Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?”

He shoved me aside, my arm hitting the desk

hard

Before Sarah could speak, David yelled

Anna, you’ve gone too far! Sarah’s sick, and

you’re attacking her!”

He radiated anger, looking at me like I was

criminal

I hissed through the pain, Why did you show

Sarah my letters? Is this how you treat my

feelings?”

David froze, noticing the letters

Г

He looked at Sarah

She sobbed, David, I found them by accident

I didn’t even open them, but Anna pushed

me.”

She held out her scraped palm

David’s eyes reddened with concern

Anna, they’re just letters. Why hurt her over

something so trivial?”

Even though I’d decided to leave him, his

words stung

He’d promised to cherish those letters, to

never let anyone see them

Now they were trivial ”

Г

Now, they were trivial.”

Apologize to Sarah, right now!”

No!I refused

David glared at me. Anna, I can’t believe

you’ve become this person!”

“You wanted me to withdraw the marriage

application last night? Fine, I agree!”

I froze, then quickly composed myself

Good, David. We’re done.”

I walked out, not looking back

David didn’t show up for the next few days

Г

I packed my bags

On the day I left, I took one last look at the

house I’d lived in for so long

I left the keys on the table and closed the

door

My car passed David’s on the road

Our eyes met

I looked away first

We wouldn’t see each other again
