Mark stared at those words, wanting to call
back, but found the number was virtual.
He frowned and ordered his men to decipher
the number immediately.
Soon, his men returned and handed him a slip
of paper with the phone number written on it.
Mark called back, and the other side
answered in less than two seconds.
Afraid the person would hang up, Mark
threatened preemptively, “I can find your
number, so I can find you. If you dare hang
up, just try it!”
く
The surgical nurse on the other end gasped,
too scared to speak.
“I ask you, what did Emily give you to make
you lie to me? She’s an Al robot. Does she
have pain nerves? Can she die from a little
blood draw?! I’ll give you one minute to tell
her to get over here and give blood to Sarah!”
The surgical nurse’s voice was weak: “Mr.
Hamilton, I didn’t lie to you. Mrs. Hamilton
really died during that blood transfusion. If
you don’t believe me, you can go to the
morgue to see for yourself. I saw Mrs.
Hamilton lying unattended in the operating
room, so I sent her to the morgue.”
Mark pursed his lips and rushed into my ward,
but it was empty.
L
He gritted his teeth and headed to the
morgue.
“I’m going to that dirty place right now. If my
wife isn’t there, you know the consequences!”
He covered his nose and mouth, pulling open.
each drawer, but didn’t find me.
After rushing out of the morgue, he started to
vomit violently.
“Damn it! How dare you lie to me! Where’s
Emily?! Get her out here!” Mark roared
furiously into the phone.
“No, impossible…” the surgical nurse was
also losing confidence. “Could I have
hallucinated? Is Mrs. Hamilton’s body still in
the operating room?”
Mark’s patience was wearing thin, and he
hurried back to the operating room where I
had the surgery.
As soon as he pushed the door open, a wave
of nauseating decay hit him.
Mark turned and ran, throwing up into a trash
can until tears and snot streamed down his
face.
The doctors and nurses who followed him
covered their noses and mouths, walked in,
and finally found the source of the stench in
the medical waste bin.
“Mr. Hamilton, this, this is an unborn fetus…”
The doctor trailed off.
Г
This operating room hadn’t been used since
my surgery, so where the fetus came from
was clear to everyone.
“Mrs. Hamilton did have a stillbirth…” the
surgical nurse chimed in.
Everyone fell silent, their eyes fixed on him.
Mark’s pupils constricted, unable to believe
that this was real, and even less willing to
believe he was the one who killed the baby.
But all of Emily’s symptoms recently pointed
to pregnancy.
He didn’t want to believe it, didn’t dare to
believe it, and could only feign ignorance and
shout angrily, “You’re all full of it! Don’t think
you can fool me with a dead baby!”
“Mr. Hamilton, it was you who gave the order,
how can you…”
“Shut up! If you dare say another word, you
won’t see tomorrow’s sun!” He couldn’t vent
his anger, so he took it out on those around
him.
The doctors and nurses cowered in fear.
He gritted his teeth and continued to ask the
surgical nurse, “Didn’t you say Emily was
dead? Where’s the body?! Did she come back
from the dead and run away?!”
My soul followed Mark into the operating
room.
Г
I watched as he instructed the nurse to take
the baby from the trash can for examination
to see if its blood could be transfused to
Sarah.
Hatred surged to my head, and I swooped
down, wanting to tear him apart!
The baby was taken away, and I wanted to
follow, but Mark went in the opposite
direction.
He ransacked my ward, throwing my
belongings all over the floor.
Not finding me, he dragged out all the bodies
in the morgue and examined them one by
one, still to no avail.
く
Just as he held his head in despair, the
elderly janitor, who had just returned from the
restroom, said shakily, “Are you looking for
Mrs. Hamilton’s body? I know where it is.”
