They were having sex at my son’s funeral!
Then, a sharp laugh came from behind me.
I turned and saw Sarah, draped in a coat,
smirking.
<
“Amy, you know, don’t you? Yes, Jason is
Mark’s son. My oxygen tank was perfectly.
fine that day. I just wanted to see where I
stood with him. I never imagined he’d actually
give me the oxygen tank meant for your son.”
“Your son looked so pathetic drowning,
crying for his mommy. But even then, Mark
didn’t hesitate to push him back down. He
didn’t even bother retrieving the body.”
“Guess whose body is really in that coffin?”
Something inside me snapped.
I lunged at her, knocking her to the ground.
<
“Amy! What are you doing?!”
Mark, witnessing the scene, grabbed my arm.
He gave Sarah a concerned look, then
ordered me, “Apologize to Sarah, right now!”
But for once, I didn’t obey.
I pushed him away and ran to Ethan’s grave,
frantically digging with my bare hands.
Everyone stared, horrified.
<
But I didn’t care. I needed to know IT Saran
was telling the truth.
Finally, my fingers touched the coffin. I ripped
it open.
Inside lay the carcass of a chicken.
All the strength drained from my body.
“Amy, what do you think you’re doing?!”
Behind me, Mark, protectively holding Sarah,
glared at me with disgust.
“Where is Ethan’s body?” I whispered.
<
Mark paused, his voice cold.
“It was a chaotic situation. We couldn’t
recover his body.”
I flew at him, hitting him, screaming, “You’re
lying! Lying!”
Mark wrestled my hands behind my back just
as Sarah said, “Mark, I think Amy’s lost it.
Why don’t we throw her in the pond to cool
her off?”
Mark hesitated, then actually dragged me
towards the pond.
<
As he threw me in, he gave me a look that
almost seemed like regret.
‘Amy, I know you’re grieving. I miss Ethan
too. But that doesn’t give you the right to act
like this.
Did he miss Ethan? I didn’t see it.
Numb, I didn’t resist as the cold water
engulfed me.
When I didn’t resurface, Mark started to
panic. But before he could do anything, Sarah
clutched her head and fainted in his arms.
“Mark, I don’t feel well. Can you take me
<
“You said Amy’s a diver. She’s a strong
swimmer. She’ll be fine.”
As I heard their footsteps retreating, I knew
Mark had made his choice.
The water closed in around me, heavy and
suffocating.
Ethan, did you feel this way?
I sank down, down, down. And I didn’t come
back up.
Mark intended to go back for me after he
took Sarah home. But Jason wouldn’t sleep
く
The next day, work kept him busy.
One thing led to another, and he actually
forgot about me.
Until the hospital called.
