The water rose quickly, covering Sarah’s legs.
She thrashed, screaming. She couldn’t swim!
But Mark watched impassively as the water
climbed higher.

Only when she was nearly submerged,
choking and gasping, did he order them to
stop.
Relief flooded Sarah. He was going to let her
live.
Then he said, “Let her recover, then fill it
again. I want her to experience what it’s like
to drown. Slowly.”
He turned and walked away, leaving Sarah
shivering in the murky water.
Mark suspected I wasn’t dead. He searched
everywhere but couldn’t find me. Despair

began to set in. But he didn’t give up.
He found Captain Jack.
“Give Amy back to me.”
Captain Jack cracked his knuckles and
punched him in the face.
Mark didn’t flinch or retaliate. He just stared
at Captain Jack, repeating, “Give Amy back
to me.”
Captain Jack scoffed and punched him again.
The once–mighty CEO was beaten, bloodied,
and on the ground, offering no resistance.

Finally, Captain Jack stopped.
“You don’t deserve her.”
Mark struggled to his feet, his eyes wild.
“She’s my wife. I have to find her.”
Captain Jack laughed bitterly.
“Wife? When did you ever treat her like a
wife?”
“She gave up everything for you, even her

that child for another woman. You almost
killed her.”
“How dare you call her your wife?!”
He shoved Mark back to the ground. This
time, he didn’t get up.
“She was born for the ocean, and you clipped
her wings. You drowned her spirit.”
“You don’t deserve her, Lewis.”
Later, Captain Jack told me that Mark stayed
outside the Dive Team headquarters for three
days, begging for my address. No one would
tell him where I was. They even took turns

days, he was soaked to the bone, but he
wouldn’t leave.
“He finally collapsed from fever and his family
took him away.”
Captain Jack sighed. “Too little, too late.
Don’t you dare forgive him, Amy.”
“I won’t,” I replied softly.
