Elijah tried to drive me home, but his car was
confiscated.
Pain flickered in his eyes.
He looked at me, eyes red.
“I’m sorry, I’m useless.”
“But believe me, I’ll marry you.”
I was curious to see how far Elijah would go
for me.
I didn’t rush to die; I stayed with him.
He went from door to door looking for work.
But people, seeing his expensive suit, refused
him.
When he was turned away from a restaurant,
it started raining.
He covered me with his coat and took me
home.
But the house was sealed.
He completely broke down, kneeling, his face
filled with despair.
“Mary, believe me, I’ll bounce back. Please
don’t leave me.”
“Okay.”
I don’t know why, but I agreed.
He hugged me, trembling.
But he didn’t know I’d be leaving.
