Chapter 24
Darlene noticed Norman’s gaze and followed it to Moira’s face, which reminded her so much of Jane’s. A tightness gripped her chest as she worried that Norman might remember Jane.
Quickly, she grabbed his hand and said. “Didn’t y go over and join her.
you want to talk business with Mr. Hickman from Hickman Group I just saw Mrs. Hickman–let’s
Norman withdrew his gaze and nodded.
Darlene seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and hurriedly pulled Norman away.
Moira watched them leave, and though she didn’t want to admit it, she couldn’t help feeling disappointed. She thought, “Norman hasn’t even recognized me. Maybe he has never really thought about me.
In his heart, there is only Darlene, her daughter, and his son, I have known this for so long–so why do I still hope for something more!
“Kayla, that necklace of yours is stunning! The diamond is enormous. I’ve never seen one like it in a jewelry store. Is it custom–mader Wendy asked.
“This one? My dad bought it for me at an auction. It went for over 7 million dollars, so of course, there’s no other like in Kayla responded.
“Wow. your dad really spoil you. Em so jealous!”
Kayla basked in Wendy’s admiration and compliments, her expression ammug. But as she casually glanced at Moira, her eyes narrowed. A quick look at her out was enough for Kayla to know exactly how cheap Moira looked.
She linked her arm with Austin’s and walked over. She glanced at Baldwin’s plain face and then looked back at Moira, a sneer playing on her lips “this your new boyfriend?” She placed extra emphasis on the word “new,” her tone dripping with disdain.
Moira’s eyes fixed on the necklace around Kayla’s neck
“I’m Moira’s boss. My name is Baldwin. It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Mitchell.” Baldy in extended his hand.
When Kayla heard the word “boss,” understanding flickered in her eyes, and her gaze toward Moira became even more condescending.
“It seems like Ms. Elliott has a habit of getting involved with her bosses, Kayla said. Her words were loud enough for those around them to hear, and everyone nearby stopped talking to watch
Baldwin’s hand hovered in the air for a second before he let it fall, smiling as he explained. “Moira, Austin, and are all classmates. I don’t have a girlfriend. Most of my peers are already married with kids, so I asked Moira for help”
Kayla’s discomfort grew. She could tell Baldwin had some kind of interest in Moira too
She couldn’t help but remember the man who had been with Moira last time–he was stunning. Now Baldwin was also successful in his career. She thought. “Why do all the good men seem to be drawn to Moiral
“Moira, why do you keep staring at Kayla’s necklace! Are you jealous?” Wendy’s voice rang out, and several pairs of eyes turned toward Moira
Wendy could clearly see that Kayla didn’t like Moira, so she raised her voice to please her. “Kayla and Austin are a perfect match. You should accept your place and stop acting like a fool, coveting things that aren’t yours.”
“Wendy, does being a lapdog make you proud?” Moira shot back coldly.
“You dare call me a lapdog” Wendy snapped, her temper flaring.
1, and while she was happy to flatter Kayla because of her status as the daughter of the Mitchell Group chairman,
Wendy had always s been arrogant, she had little respect for Moira
After all, Moira had broken up with Austin and was now dating a n
a man with little to offer, Without thinking twice, Wendy raised her hand, ready in slap Moira
Just as Moira was about to react, Baldwin quickly grabbed Wendy’s wrist.
“What a
are you doing? Let go of me!” Wendy jerked her arm back.
“Ma Jory, let’s keep this civilized. No need for violence,” Baldwin said, his voice calin but fin.
“Baldwin, who do you think you are, interfering?” Wendy spat, glaring at him with contempt.
