Chapter 7
Liam
Leaving the operating room, I headed straight for the hospital director’s office. What my colleague had told me seemed illogical. Annie had never been irresponsible, so I didn’t trust the information circulating around the hospital
“Good afternoon, I’d like to speak with Dr. Vargas Is he available? The chief’s assistant smiled at me flirtatiously. Nothing could stop the women from harassing me now, and this girl was proof. I tried to appear cold; I wasn’t in the mood.
“Of course, Doctor, let me inform him” She called him, and when she hung up, she told me I could go in.
Upon entering, the older man stood up to greet me.
“Dr. Donovan, how are you? What can I do for you?” Something told me he knew why I was there, but he was trying to delay the explanations.
“Good afternoon, Doctor. Excuse me for bothering you, but I’ve heard some rumors. It’s about Dr. Johnson. Is it true that she has permanently left the hospital?” I didn’t know why the idea of her leaving bothered me so much, but by the look on the chief’s face, I assumed it was true. Her letter had seemed very ambiguous, so I thought she was just playing around. Now I saw that it was real
Indeed. The doctor has retired to attend to some personal matters, and the Morrison sisters have gone with her. I have no further information”
I knew he wouldn’t tell me anything else, so I just sat down and started talking about other points I wanted to discuss with him. The man relaxed when he saw that I had changed the subject, but my mind couldn’t concentrate. The question of where Annie had gone filled my head. It shouldn’t have mattered so much to me, but it did. An alert in my body coming from who knows where, made me feel worried.
Hours later, I was getting ready to go home. Some colleagues invited me for a drink, but I wasn’t in the mood. When I was alone, I called Maria.! wanted to ask her out. She had to feel comfortable in front of others when we were together, since we were going to be officially dating soon
I imagined she was afraid of being judged for going out with someone who was supposed to get married just a few days ago, but I thought she should get used to our new situation.
I drove to my parents‘ house. I hoped my mother would be calmer and I could talk to her. When I arrived, I parked and hurried out of the car, when! was inside the house, I saw that they were sitting in the living room with Annie’s family. Something stirred inside me, but I tried to ignore it.
“Good afternoon,” I greeted everyone, and they all returned the greeting. I saw that the atmosphere was better than yesterday, most likely she wasn’t living with them and her trip was real
“Hello, son. Come in. We’re talking to David and Sam You might be interested in what they have to tell us.”
I figured it was about Annie, so I looked for a place on the couch.
“Sure. You can start taking” It was Uncle David who spoke
“Well in light of recent events, I think it would be best if no longer involved myself in hospital affairs. I’m going to sell my shares. If any of you are interested in acquiring them, I’m willing to listen to offers. I’ll give you the first option to buy, and if you’re not interested, I’ll offer them to someone else”
Silence fell among all of us. From what I could see, Annie’s situation was serious. If her father was no longer interested in being a shareholder, it was because her departure, as rumored in the hallways, was definite. The discomfort I had been experiencing was increasing by the minute. I couldn’t ask about her because I had no right to, but if her parents seemed calm, it was because she was fine and just wanted to get away from everyone. But as if my mouth had a life of its own, the words came out before I could stop them.
“Is Annie okay?” Everyone was silent at my question, but as if I hadn’t said anything, after a few minutes, they changed the subject back to the shares. I felt ignored, so I stood up. I didn’t know what prompted me to do it, but again I spoke without thinking.
“Aunts and uncles, I want to say that I regret what happened. But it was something I had discussed with Annie. She knew I didn’t want to get married because I love someone else. I’m going to start a formal relationship with Maria, and I hope that in a few years, we can get married without any problems. I don’t want to do things behind anyone’s back, that’s why I’m telling you upfront.
My mother looked at me as if she wanted to kill me, as did my father, but strangely enough, Maria also looked annoyed.
“Thank you for saying so, Liam. It seems Annie already knew and didn’t say anything. But don’t worry, there’s no problem on our end. Things always fall into place, and if what you did seemed right to you, despite causing my daughter so much pain, only time will tell who is right. Well seeing as there no interest in our proposal, we’ll be on our way”
The Johnsons stood up, and my parents did the same. Did I feel bad? Terrible. One mistake after another, I saw my brother glaring at Maria, who just lowered her head. I sat down next to her to comfort her, but she avoided touch.

is something wrong?” She looked up, and I saw tears in her eyes.
“Do you want everyone to hate me?” I looked at her in confusion. I thought she would be happy for everyone to know that she was the woman I loved.

“All I want is for everyone to know that we love each other and that we are a couple, that’s all” She nodded in understanding. I knew I had been impulsive, but I didn’t want anything hidden with her.
After the visitors left, my parents entered the house. Mom didn’t even look at me and retired to her room. Dad stayed with us for a moment and
called my attention
“Liam, you have to learn to control your impulsiveness. There was no need to bring up your relationship with Maria when you were just about to get married yesterday But anyway, it’s done. I remind you that all the harm we cause, fate collects with interest” He turned to look at my girlfriend, who remained silent on the couch.“1 don’t see this supposed love you have for each other, but I did see you comfortable with Annie. I truly hope that what you have is real and not a false illusion. I’m going with your mother. She’s not doing well with this situation, I’m sorry, but you don’t have my support”
When he said that, Maria ran off to her room. Rage began to build inside me. To begin with, Annie and I should never have happened. Let alone get to
the point of getting married. But I thought it best to retire and see how my relationship with Maria could be accepted.
I left my parents‘ house, wondering what to do. All that was left was to wait for time to pass and for everything to be forgotten.
Annie
“Hi, Annie, are you done with your work?” I was putting away some instruments had used in the office, and hearing Aaron’s voice, I turned to look at him. He seemed very serious about his offer to take care of me. I smiled slightly as I lowered my gaze. In reality, I always had suitors who followed me
and did what I wanted, but they all had an ulterior motive, but now I couldn’t decipher what this boy was looking for in me.
“Yes, I’m done.” I took my bag, and we left. As I walked towards where my things were, a sudden dizziness made me stagger and almost fall. My new friend ran to my side and managed to hold me I could see the fear in his eyes. But I, as a specialist, knew it was a normal symptom.
“My God, Annie! You have to be careful. Have you eaten?” His concern filled me with tenderness. I gave him a slight smile as I remained in his arms.
“Yes, I ate well, but this is normal, don’t worry.” He gave me a confused look, so I decided to put his mind at ease.
“Aaron, I’m pregnant. So you’ll be seeing me with some ailments soon” His face turned pale. It seemed that what I had just told him came as a bigger
surprise than I thought.
“You’re pregnant? Are you married? And the father let you come?” I shook my head. So many questions.
“It’s a long story. Let’s have dinner, and I’ll tell you my pathetic story”
