The boarding announcement was blaring over the speakers. I ignored the vibrating phone and deleted Jake’s number. It was over.
Meanwhile at the hospital. Jake was freaking
out.
He stared at the red exclamation point and started calling me again and again.
“The number you have dialed is not available. Please try again later.”
He didn’t hear a thing, his fingers kept mashing
the screen.
“It’s not possible… how….” he mumbled. “We
were supposed to go get married.”
Then he bolted out of the hospital, tearing to the airport.
“Hey, has Lisa quit? How can she be in Paris? What happened!” he demanded of my manager, who was very confused.
“She never told you? She put in her resignation after your party two days ago, and I asked her if you knew, she said she’d talk to you about
it.” she replied.
Jake looked like he’d been punched.
