Three years ago, I would never have agreed to go back to the States. Even if they gave me a higher salary and a better position. But my heart was healed, I agreed.
Before going, I messaged Sarah, my colleague and best friend.
“Hey, I’m going back. How are the bosses?
She was ecstatic that I was going home, we
talked for three hours.
The next day, I landed, and my friends and boss
were there, all with the same surprised look on
their face.
Apparently, living for myself had done me good.
And after landing, I finally learned why Jake
suddenly disappeared after my second year.
He had ended his relationship with Tiffany after
I left. And during his second year in Paris, his
plane had an emergency. The left wing caught
on fire, and he landed with a crash.
Everyone was safe, but he was injured. His leg

was ruined, and he couldn’t be a pilot anymore.
I guess we were never meant to be together. In
his flying career, both of his crashes happened
on his Paris routes.
And me, Paris was my peak.
Sarah knew that I was still healing, and she
didn’t mention his name. But she told me
everything once I came home. I asked her where
he was working.
Sarah thought I was going to go back to him.
But I smiled, and walked to the control tower.
I know this place like the back of my hand. And
now, being here alone, it felt different.
As if Jake knew I was coming home, he was
standing outside with a bouquet of roses, his
face was dull, almost like a ghost.
When he saw me, he seemed excited, I could
see he was still holding on.
I laughed.
“Don’t give me the flowers. It’s been two years, and we never had a proper good bye.”
Then I turned and left.
I knew, from that moment on, I was finally free.
