Chapter 5 Taking Everything Back

Jennifer glanced around, surprised that even the doghouse was so luxurious.
Ryan cleared his throat. “Mr. Clark has a wolfdog, but it’s out for a check–up today.”
“Oh, I don’t mind!” Jennifer replied, planting herself right in. front of the little house like she had no plans to leave. Ryan sighed, defeated, and left.
As soon as he was gone, her playful look disappeared. She massaged her swollen ankle, wincing from the pain.
Pulling out her battered old phone, she idly scrolled through social media and paused at a post from Sarah: [Best day ever. I finally have a family!]
The photo showed Sarah smiling alongside Asher, Daniel, and a group of friends.
A wry smile tugged at Jennifer’s lips.
Her phone suddenly rang, and Daniel’s angry voice burst through. “Jennifer, where did you run off to? Just because we gave Sarah your room, you think it’s fine to storm out like this?”
The little hope Jennifer had left faded completely.

She tried to hang up, but her phone froze and left the call on speaker.

“Jennifer, Sarah’s injury is your fault. You’re responsible for her! Besides, her mother saved your life once. You’d better not forget that!”
Jennifer’s voice was steady, with a hint of frost. “I’m at the hospital.”
“The hospital?”
Daniel scoffed, “For a minor sprain? Sarah’s injuries are worse than yours, and she didn’t run off making a scene. You’re just trying to gel sympathy, aren’t you? You think we’d fall for it?”
Jennifer’s ankle throbbed, and her chest tightened with frustration.
She took a sharp breath, losing all patience, and cut the call.
Glancing up, she stared into the endless night sky.
Her gaze drifted to the window on the second floor, a bitter realization settling in. As always, he was exactly as she remembered from her past life, cold, unpredictable, and indifferent.
Even as his fiancée, she was left to sleep in the doghouse, and he didn’t seem to care in the slightest.
Meanwhile, on the second floor, Timothy stood by the window,

“Timothy, I heard Jennifer came to see you. You’d better not drive her away! If you do, I’ll move in tomorrow and stay with you both!”
With a sigh, Timothy hung up and looked down at Jennifer, stubbornly refusing to leave her spot by the doghouse.
He had overheard her earlier phone call and guessed that she was here to escape some trouble back home.
His assistant, trying to be subtle, cleared his throat. “Sir, Ms. Hargreaves is your fiancée. If word gets out that she’s staying in a doghouse… well, it wouldn’t reflect well on your image. Not exactly gentlemanly, if I may say so.”
Since when have I ever cared to be a gentleman?”
“What if Madam Clark finds out…”
Irritated, Timothy finally muttered, “Fine, arrange a room for her.”
“Right away!”
The assistant knew he’d give in eventually.
Soon enough, Jennifer saw the front doors swing open, and Ryan stepped out.
“Ms. Hargreaves, please follow me.”

Her eyes lit up as she hobbled over. “So, Mr. Clark agreed to let me stay?”
“I wouldn’t know about that. But Ms. Hargreaves, I must remind you. Please don’t wander around, and avoid getting too close
to Mr. Clark. He values peace and quiet. Any disruptions, and you’ll be shown the door again.”
“Understood!”
Ryan led her to a modest room on the first floor, probably meant for staff, but she felt relieved.
It was miles better than the doghouse.
As she settled onto the bed, her mind began to churn with plans.
If the Hargreaves family didn’t value her, she had no reason to keep giving.
She would take back everything she’d given before she left them for good.
Her thoughts turned to Daniel’s album. She’d already written the lead track but hadn’t handed it over yet.
In her previous life, he’d dismissed her song, choosing one by Sarah, only for that track to flop.
Later, the song she’d written went viral, but Daniel had given Sarah credit, launching her into fame while Jennifer, the true
Chapter 5 Taking Everything Back writer, remained invisible.
Jennifer recalled it all, her expression hardening.
This time, she’d never let them take advantage.
She’d rather sell the song herself.

The next morning, Jennifer woke up early, checked her phone, and saw nothing.
Not a single person had even noticed she hadn’t come home.
Shaking off the sting, she forced herself up, ignoring the pain. from her ankle, now swollen like a bun.
She hobbled into the hall and spotted Timothy at the dining table, eating breakfast in absolute silence.
The servants moved around him like shadows, not a single sound breaking the stillness.
Jennifer paused, watching him. He sat tall, composed, radiating an elegance that seemed almost otherworldly.
She had never seen a man look so effortlessly poised.
And yet, his injury was a painful reminder of life’s cruelty.
Sensing her presence, Timothy set down his fork and fixed her with an intense stare, so sharp it made her catch her breath.

She could feel the weight of his gaze, like he was reading her every thought.
His voice cut through the silence. “What’s the real reason you came here?”
Jennifer’s eyes didn’t waver. “I want you to e
