Chapter 10
At six in the morning. Moira arrived at the hospital. She pusheid open the door to her mother’s ward and saw her already awake, scrolling through pictures on her phone. Hearing the door creak, Jane looked up in surprise.
“Why are you here so early?” Jane asked, her brows furrowed. “You usually don’t come until seven.”
“I couldn’t sleep, Moira admitted, pulling a chair closer to the bed.
She hadn’t brought breakfast, as the doctor had instructed Jane to fast before her surgery. And after the surgery, shed only be allowed small sips of
water and soft foods.
Jane’s gaze lingered on Moira’s bloodshot eyes, and a pang of guilt struck her.
“You couldn’t sleep because you’re worried about me, isn’t it?” Jane said softly, setting her phone aside. She rook Moira’s hand gemily, her voice tinged with reassurance. “Dr. Tenny said the surgery has a very high success rate.
“It will succeed, Moira said with quiet determination, clasping her mother’s hand tightly. “Mom, don’t be afraid. I’ll be right outside, waiting for you. Once you recover, I’ll take you on a trip,”
“You’ll see me in my wedding dress one day, and I promise I’ll stop making you angry. From now on. I’ll listen to everything you say? Moira. asured

Jane smiled through her tears, panting Moira’s hand. “Alright, alright. I’ll hold you to
The surgery was scheduled to take place at nine o’clock
When it was about time, Moira and a nurse wheeled Jane to the operating floor. At the operating theatre’s door, Moira had to stop, and her heart pounded against her chest as she watched them push Jane in
Moira checked the time on her phone repeatedly as the minutes crept by anxious as she watched nurses and doctors walking by.
Almost an hour after the scheduled time, something unusual cought Moira’vattention. She hadn’t seen Dr. Tenny.
Instead, an elderly doctor with an authoritative air entered the operating theatre. Moments later, the light above the room switched on, indicating the surgery had begun.
Confused, Moira flagged down a passing nurse. “Excuse me, has my mo
mother’s surgery started? Why didn’t I see Dr. Tenny go in
The nurse smiled reassuringly. “Dr. Tenny is performing another surgery next door. Dr. Stokes is handling your mother’s operation”
“Dr. Stokes?” Moira’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Do you mean the renowned Dr. Mike Stakes!“
The murse chuckled. “Yes, the one and only. You’re very lucky. He’s a great specialist in gastric cancer surgeries, and Dr. Tenny trained under him. Your mother is in the best hands.”

As she was muttering to herself, the elevator doors beside her slid open. A tall figure stepped out. Sensing his presence, Moira turned and froze.
It was Virgil. Their eyes briefly met before Virgil ended the call and walked toward her.
“You… What are you doing here?” Moira stammered, caught off guard.
Virgil’s expression remained calm. Tm here to visit Mrs. Elliou
Although married, they had only informed their mothers that they were dating. As a result, they didn’t change how they addressed each other’s parents
However, Virgil’s formal way of addressing her mother made Moira feel he likely didn’t see her as his wife. This realization left her feeling a bit deflated.
On the way back to the ward, they walked silently, one ahead of another, like strangers who had never met
When they arrived at the ward. Moira mustered a smile. “Mom, Virgil’s here to visit you,” she said, trying to sound cheerful despite feeling down.
Inside the ward, Jane was pleasantly surprised to see Virgil. Though she had seen photos of him before, meeting him in person was different
He was even more handsome in person, and Jane couldn’t help but worry for Moira, concerned that the relationship might not end well.
Jane observed that Virgil had come bearing gifts, like nutritional supplements and other items she recognized as expensive.
“It’s kind of you to come,” Jane said warmly. “You really shouldn’t have gone through the trouble of buying gifts
“Don’t worry about it, Virgil reassured. “It’s just a small gesture
Jane had once enjoyed a life of luxury as a wealthy housewife, surrounded by expensive supplements and fine living
She recalled that Page had mentioned her son didn’t make a large income, yet he chose to spend so much on nutritional supplements for her. It made her realize how much he valued Moira
In stark contrast, Austin hadn’t even bothered to visit her once during her hospitalization
ing how much Page cared for Moira, she felt
After making this comparison Jane’s opinion of Virgil improved significantly. Furthermore, seeing confident that the Adams family woukl take excellent care of her daughter after their marriage
Just as they settled in, the sound of knocking interrupted them. A team of doctors, led by Dr. Stokes, entered
Dr. Stokes was surprised to see Virgil in the ward, but when he saw Moira, his lips curled into a knowing smile
After checking on Jane’s condition, Dr. Stokes dismissed the other doctors and tumed to Virgil with a smile. “No wonder you insisted I fly back to Eldoria for this surgery,” he teased. “Is this your mother–in–law?”
At Dr. Stokes‘ words, Moira turned to Virgil, her face confused. The other doctors and nurses paused, their curiouity piqued, and turned to look at them.
Virgil’s calm facade wavered. “She’s my j
y girlfriend’s mother.”
Dr. Stokes raised a brow. “Your girlfriend? You’re not married yet?”
“What are you waiting for? You’re not getting any younger, Dr. Stokes teased with a grin. “You’re hopeless at dating, and yet I’ve been calling you the face of Hillford University”
Turning to Moira, Dr. Stokes grinned, “This young man called me twice, practically begging me to return. I turned him down the first time, insisting that Dr. Tenny was just as capable. When he called me again a few days ago, I thought he was out of his mind. So, he’s doing this all for
Dr. Tenny, who was with the group, chuckled. “So that’s why you flew back overnight, right after finishing your work.”
Upon hearing the conversation. Moira’s checks turned red as the room filled with chuckles from the doctors and nurses.
