Chapter 2
<
Veronica strode into the room in a high–end
power suit, her heels clicking on the floor.
The conference room immediately fell silent.
Ashley rushed to pull out a chair for her, but
Veronica didn’t sit down. Instead, she
marched right up to me, her voice dripping
with contempt.
4
“Kyle, stop with the scare tactics. Trying to
act important just makes me dislike you
more!”
I was stunned. I thought she was telling
Ashley to shut it, but she meant me.
Veronica didn’t give me a chance to speak.
“I regret ever letting you in this company! I
still don’t understand why Grandpa was so
insistent on bringing in your deadweight, and
who are you to talk to anyone that way? Who
needs you, you’re nothing here.”
We’ve been married for five years, or at least
played the part to anyone on the outside. She
has to maintain the charade.
The complete disrespect from her, and the
utter lack of support in front of everyone,
shocked me and made my blood run cold.
Five years ago, Veronica’s grandfather pulled
some strings and got me a job as the
Cybersecurity manager at her company.
“The company is in a critical situation right
now, Kyle, thank you for lending a hand,” he’d
said.
く
At the time, Veronica had been super nice,
fresh from studying abroad and looking young
and naive.
Later, her grandfather set us up, and we
ended up getting married.
I was head over heels for her from the start.
Otherwise, with my personality, I would never
have agreed to a marriage, simply to help
Veronica’s grandfather.
Back then, I figured even if Veronica didn’t
love me, she at least liked me enough to give
it a shot.
She said we’d work on it, but “working on it”
turned into five years of nothing.
Time passed, and she clearly forgot
everything I’d quietly done to support her.
Looking at her cold face, I couldn’t see a
trace of the person I’d married.
“If you want to dissolve Cybersecurity, go get
Grandpa’s approval first. If he agrees, then
I’m out. I only came to this company because
of the friendship between our grandfathers,
not anyone here!” I said.
Veronica’s face twitched, and she went on
the offensive.
“What? You’re going to use Grandpa against
me? What else can you do except try to get
your way? No wonder Grandpa brought you
here, I don’t get why he did it. All you do is
take up space.”
Г
I looked at Veronica and couldn’t recognize
her anymore.
The other employees jumped on the
bandwagon, trying to push me out.
“Why don’t you just leave? Veronica has
spoken! Kyle, you’re an adult, no need to be
so stubborn, right?”
“Why make this so difficult? Why not just
leave peacefully?”
“Come on, Kyle, be a man, and stop dragging
this out.”
I was confused at first, but after seeing who
was grouped together, it all clicked.
I a neard rumors that a тew of them were
colluding to get kickbacks and skimming
money.
The same assistant that was giving me
trouble was the one trying to get me to fake
data so I refused.
It had all been one, big set up.
It seems like that’s when everyone at the
company started seeing me as an outsider,
and that’s when I was being targeted.
It turns out that it was all because of those
guys!
Veronica is blindly trusting them. It is not
clear what exactly she was doing when she
went to study overseas.
Г
I turned to the guy who told me I was being
“stubborn,” ready to call them out on their
crap.
If I remember correctly, his name is James.
“James, is it just because I wouldn’t do your
accounting for you, there’s really no need to
be like this. What about you, Louis and you,
Andy. Are you all really ready to just leave,
how would you possibly maintain the lifestyle
you’ve grown accustomed to?”
