Chapter 4
I forced myself to stay calm and grit my
teeth.
“Don’t worry, I wouldn’t stoop that low.
Veronica, I just hope you don’t regret this
decision later!”
Even though I promised I wouldn’t, Veronica
still didn’t trust me.
I took off my badge and slammed it on the
table in front of everyone. As I turned to
leave, Veronica suddenly stopped me.
For a second, I thought she’d changed her
mind, but she just left me with one last dig.
“Since we’re being honest, I’m not going to
pretend anymore. We’re getting a divorce!
Kyle, I’ve never loved you!”
I let out a laugh that was filled with anger.
“Trust me, I wasn’t delusional enough to think
you did!”
I saw that coming. Did Veronica really think
I’d still have feelings for her after all this?
Even if she hadn’t said it, I would’ve filed for
divorce tomorrow!
We’ve been married for five years, but it’s
been a sham. Separate rooms, only putting on
a show for her grandfather.
And in our daily lives, we’ve always kept to
ourselves.
Veronica didn’t have time to reply before her
coworkers started kissing up again.
“That’s a smart move, Veronica! I don’t know
how anyone could’ve stayed with someone
like that!”
“Yeah, he’s a waste of space, and he doesn’t
deserve Veronica.”
“It’s good it didn’t last too long. There’s no
point in dragging things out. It’s better to call
it quits early!”
Seeing her coldness, I turned back and looked
at her.
“Have you thought about what you’re going
<
to tell Grandpa?”
Veronica hesitated, then frowned.
“That’s none of your business! You can just
get out. I’ll explain things to Grandpa!”
She trailed off, and I knew what she was
getting at.
She’s counting on her grandfather spoiling
her. She already found a replacement and is
ready to just make the decision.
I scoffed.
“What’s with the look on your face? You
found someone else already?”
As soon as I said that. Veronica seemed to
Г
snap out of it and hide her smile. She glared
at me and said,
“That’s none of your business! Even if I did,
they’d be a hundred times better than you!
You’re a former employee, what right do you
have to question the company’s future
plans?”
The other coworkers agreed that Veronica’s
standards were high, and she’d definitely find
someone better than me.
“Just leave! What are you still doing here?
Are you going to stand here and make
everyone look at you until you start to gain
some points and get what you want? Are you
not embarrassed?”
Ashley told me to leave.
I didn’t want to waste any more time and just
made my position clear.
“If I’m going, I’m also taking down the firewall
I developed. It’s my work, and I patented it, so
no one else can take credit for it!”
