Chapter 6
My coworkers were grinning at me as I
packed up my computer, and Cody turned to
Veronica, promising,
“Don’t worry, Veronica, I’ll write even better
and stronger code. Guys like him are
washed–up. I don’t know why he’s hanging
around!”
Judging by his tone, everyone realized they
were an item.
Veronica blushed a little and nodded.
“I know you will, you’re the new head of
Cybersecurity now.”
I paused, stopped listening to their flirting,
and left.
As I walked out of the building, I heard
someone calling me.
I turned around and saw Cody catching up
with me, a smug look on his face.
“Kyle, you realized Veronica and I are close,
right? I heard she’s been single all these
years, thank you for taking care of my future
wife for me.”
“…And?” I asked.
My face darkened, and he continued.
“Well, you’re even now. She gave you a free
ride for all those years.”
He thanked me while insulting me.
The anger I’d been holding back since the
meeting suddenly erupted.
I grabbed him by the collar and brought him
close, glaring at him.
“Let me tell you something, Cody! This
company is screwed without me! I regret
working for you people so much, you’re
nothing!”
I balled my fists, then let go, and said,
“I hope you don’t regret this!”
I didn’t want to cause any more trouble and
didn’t want to deal with anyone from that
company.
“Kyle! What are you doing?!”
Before I knew it, Veronica was screaming and
running toward us.
Cody, the second I let go, acted like I’d
pushed him, and started groaning.
“Just because you don’t like me doesn’t mean
you have to hit me!”
Slap!
Before I could react, Veronica stood up for
Cody and slapped me in the face.
“This just makes me hate you more! You’re a
useless waste. You can’t even do your job, so
you resort to violence?”
My head snapped to the side, and I touched
my cheek.
Veronica had put everything she had into that.
Seeing that I didn’t say anything, Veronica
helped Cody up, and continued ranting.
“You’re disgusting! Don’t ever come near me
again. You’re not even fit to tie Cody’s
shoes!”
She was trashing my dignity, and I finally lost
it with Veronica.
“Fine! I don’t care what happens to the
company!”
“Get out of here, don’t curse my company! I
never want to see you again!”
Veronica waved me away.
“You think you can just say that? You think
you can just say what happens to my
company? What a joke.”
I smirked, and hoped she could keep
laughing.
Then a limo pulled up to the building.
The door opened, and a gray–haired man,
looking sharp and alert, was helped out. He
started shouting,
“Who dares to fire Kyle?!”
Veronica’s grandfather. What the heck?
