Since my parents wouldn’t let me go home, I
had to move into my grandma’s old house.

On the day of my brother’s funeral, to avoid being driven away by my parents, I could only attend discreetly, hiding in the crowd.
Sarah, dressed in white, stood out among the
sea of black. She stood next to Michael’s
portrait, crying her eyes out.
And beside her, carefully wiping her tears,
was Ethan.
“Sarah, your eyes are red from crying. Please don’t cry like this. I’m worried about you.”
Sarah looked back at him affectionately.
In the noisy funeral home, it seemed like they
only had eyes for each other.
Finally, Ethan’s parents, worried about the
bad impression they were making, quickly
found an excuse to call Ethan away.
As Ethan was about to get something, he
suddenly noticed me. His eyes instantly filled
with anger. He grabbed my arm and pulled
me out of the crowd.
“Today is Michael’s funeral. Can you please
not make a scene?”
Before I could speak, contemptuous gazes fell
upon me.
“Her own brother is dead, yet she only cares
about men. How shameless.”
“If Michael knew his sister threatened Ethan
with his son’s life, he’d probably be furious.
“How desperate to get married must she be
to do something like this? Serves her right for
being kicked out!”
Ethan listened calmly to everyone’s insults,
without any intention of standing up for me.
I had to explain myself, “Ethan and I were
engaged by our families. If you don’t believe
me, you can ask…”
Seeing my parents and Ethan’s parents
walking towards us, Ethan immediately
interrupted me coldly.
“Ashley, can you please not be so petty about
everything? Can you let Michael rest in
peace!”

My heart filled with pain and anger, I glared at
Ethan sarcastically.
“With such a good friend thoughtfully taking
care of his wife, how could my brother not
peace?”

A flicker of guilt flashed in his eyes, and he roared angrily, “What nonsense are your
talking about?”
As soon as he finished speaking, some guests
began to murmur.
“Ethan and Sarah do seem a little too close.
Is Sarah going to remarry so soon after
Michael’s death?”
Sarah, who had just walked over, overheard
this, her face turned pale, and she bit her lip,
looking at Ethan.
Ethan immediately walked over, grabbed the
speaker by the collar, and punched him.
The man was startled and quickly explained, “Don’t be mad, I was just saying.”
“Just saying? Do you know rumors can kill
people?!”
So he knew how much rumors could hurt a
person. But he could readily defend someone
else while I was the one being hurt..
Sarah walked to Ethan in tears.
“I don’t care if people talk about me, but I
can’t let Jason suffer these rumors with me.

You can protect me for a while, but you can’t
protect me forever.

Looking at Sarah’s fragile appearance, Ethan
held her in his arms with heartache.
“Who says I can’t protect you forever?”
With that, he firmly held Sarah’s hand and
announced to everyone, “Ashley and I have
broken off our engagement. We were
engaged because of our parents. I’ve never
had any feelings for her.”
“Now, I’m going to make a choice for myself.
I will marry Sarah and stay by her side forever
to take care of her and Jason.”
“From now on, if I hear any more rumors
about Sarah, I won’t let anyone who slanders
