Sarah and I had been together for three
years.
It started when she saw me helping an injured
patient at the hospital, the sunlight catching
the glass.
The summer wind rustled the leaves of the
trees, and the sounds of the city floated in
through the open window.
My voice carried through the air.
She turned and saw me working, bathed in
light.
It was like being struck by lightning. I saw her,
too.
An invisible connection formed between us,
like walking down the street in Paris and
seeing your destiny.
Our relationship moved quickly. Sarah
became my family.
So when I started hearing the rumors, I
refused to believe them.
“Hey, did you hear?”
“Danny is back.”
A group of med students, dressed in
expensive clothes, gossiped in the corner.
“Who do you think Sarah will pick, Danny or
Mikey?”
“Is that even a question? She’s been
く
obsessed with Danny for ten years. They’re
childhood sweethearts!”
One of the students glanced at me and rolled
his eyes, pulling his friends away.
“Mikey doesn’t even know he’s a stand–in. I
bet she’ll dump him any day now and go after
the real deal.”
“Mikey’s nothing. Danny comes from a family
of doctors…”
The rumors grew louder.
I was distracted. I didn’t see someone
standing outside the door of the practice
room.
The door swung open and hit the person’s
The sharp edge sliced their skin, and blood
welled up instantly.
That’s when things really changed.
I finally met Danny.
He looked a little like me, especially in profile.
He was also a surgeon, just like me.
We even had similar habits.
Sarah always hugged me, calling me “Dan”
over and over.
I thought it was special. Everyone else called
me Mikey.
But only with Sarah, I was one of a kind.
く
But she wasn’t saying “Dan“. She was saying
“Danny“.
