Chapter 10
I sighed and helped Carol to her feet. “Aunt
Carol, stop it. I don’t want your money.”
I faced the cameras, looking troubled. “As you can see, I don’t live in a mansion, but my
place is still pretty high–end. There’s no way
that…..”
I snatched the savings passbook from Carol. “There’s no way I’d be interested in a few
thousand bucks. I spend more than that on a
handbag.”
Carol looked embarrassed. She clearly didn’t
expect me to open the passbook. She stammered, “Yes, we don’t have much money,
but you enjoy making us feel poor, right?
That’s why you won’t donate. That’s why you
changed your mind!”
“If I’m wrong, go donate and prove it! Show
me I’m the bad guy.”
I sighed again. “You know I can’t give Mark a kidney because my own health isn’t great.
How can you say such awful things?”
The three of them seemed relieved. Carol went back to kneeling. “You’re right, you’re not healthy. But this is about saving a life! You won’t die without a kidney. Mark will!” “You’ve been together for years. Are you really going to let him die?”
Jessica chimed in, all weepy. “Yeah, Ashley.
This is about saving a life! Mark and I are just
friends, but if I could donate, I would!”
Carol added, “Saving a life is the best thing
you can do! I wish I could die for Mark!”
Hearing that, I smiled. “Great!”
