Chapter 9
Seeing Carol smirking like I was the lucky
one, and Jessica faking tears, I couldn’t keep
acting.
<
“Mark, I wanted to give you my kidney. I didn’t
want you to die young, but I’ve changed my
mind. Everyone has their own fate!”
“You want to live and take care of your mom,
and I want to stay healthy and be with my
parents.”
“Let me make one thing clear. You were the
one who chased after me, begged me to be
with you. I didn’t force myself on you, so you
can get over yourself and just move on.”
Mark was stunned. “How could you do this to
me? I don’t even care that you only have one
kidney.”
I rolled my eyes. “I have two kidneys. I’d only
have one if I gave it to you. I’m not giving it to
you. You’re dying, so you’re in no place to
judge me.”
Carol was furious.
She tried to hit me.
I wasn’t going to let her.
I dodged her attack and she went flying out
the door, tripping over her own feet.
I closed the door while Mark and Jessica
were helping her up.
Those three shouted at me for a few minutes,
then left.
From their look, I knew this wasn’t over.
Two weeks later, I was stuck in my
apartment.
Mark, Carol, and Jessica, along with a bunch
of news reporters, were standing outside my door, ready to use public opinion to force me
to donate.
As soon as I opened the door, Carol fell to
her knees and started crying.
“Ashley, please save Mark.”
I’d been busy the last two weeks.
This was just what I needed.
Chapter 9
Before I could say a word, all the cameras were pointed at me, flashes blinding me. Carol pulled out a savings passbook and a couple of credit cards. “Ashley, I’ll give you everything! All the money you want! Just save Mark. I’ll do anything, even die, to make you
give Mark your kidney.”
Jessica sniveled, wiping her eyes and facing the cameras. “Don’t get the wrong idea. This isn’t some guilt trip. It’s…it’s complicated.” “Ashley and Mark have been together for
years. They love each other. They were even talking about getting married. Then, Mark got diagnosed with kidney failure and needs a
transplant.”
“Mark didn’t want Ashley to get tested, but
she insisted. She was a match, and she filled
out the surgery paperwork. There’s proof of
everything but she stopped at the point of
<
donating her kidney!”
Mark looked up, a single tear running down
his face. He seemed conflicted, but he picked up where Jessica left off. “She wants my mom to give her all her money. She wants my mom to be her personal assistant! Otherwise, she won’t donate. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want my mom to suffer, but I don’t want
her to bury me either…”
Not bad.
I had to give them props.
If I said I didn’t want money, it’d look like I
was willing to donate for free.
If I demanded money, it’d look like I was only
doing it for the cash.
If I refused to donate no matter what, nobody
would believe me.
After all, I had been the one who’d pushed for
the testing and the surgery.
They thought of a good plan in order to screw
