- 14.
I woke up in the hospital.
Leo was still unconscious. I held his hand,
wishing I hadn’t called him.
“I won’t let those people get away with this!”
Hot tears fell on his cold hand.
I checked myself out of the hospital and
started working on the trial prep.
I was going to put Amber, Tommy, and Dave
in jail myself!
I was running back and forth from the police
station to the hospital.
The trial was soon set.
Before it started, I got a surprise visit.
“Frank, what are you doing here?”
I had mixed feelings about my former mentor.
But I figured his visit wasn’t good news.
“Sue, how did we get to this point? I
remember when…”
I snapped:
“Yeah, how did we get here?”
“I want to know: who is Amber to you, that
you would do this?”
“That you would break your own values,
ignore your responsibilities?”
He looked defeated.
“Sue, it’s… Amber’s my daughter.
“”
“I never got married. Then, late in life, I found
out I had a daughter. I wanted to protect her.
“I left her mother.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I didn’t think she’d go this far.”
“If she goes to prison, her life will be ruined!”
“Please, don’t report her, can you?”
I laughed.
“Parents want what’s best for their children.
“But you kept letting her get away with
everything, leading her down a criminal path.’

“Now you’re trying to get her off the hook!
You’re totally delusional.”
I just wanted to leave, but he wouldn’t let me
- go.
“I can sign off on anything for you! I can give
you anything to win a big case!”
But I ignored his plead.
