Chapter 10
After they left, the house was quiet.
I opened my laptop and typed up divorce
papers.
Looking at the one–page document, I felt a
pang of sadness.
We’d been married for eight years, but there
wasn’t much to divide.
The house was his before we got married,
and Brittany was his daughter.
He gave me seven hundred dollars a month,
which went straight to his family.
<
I had no idea if he had any money hidden
away.
Only two cars needed to be divided.
Looking back, I’d given up everything for this
marriage and got nothing in return.
I put my head in my hands, wanting to cry.
But I held it back.
I knew better now, and it was time to move
- on.
They were the ones who should be crying, not
me
<
That evening, Brittany kicked down the door
and stomped in.
“Why did you cancel my violin lessons?” she
yelled.
“Don’t you know how important those are?”
I looked at my phone, not even bothering to look up.
“I ran out of money,” I said.
“So I cancelled them.‘
She got even angrier.
く
“What right do you have to cancel my
lessons?” she demanded.
“My dad pays for those!”
“Oh, does he?” I said.
“Then maybe he should pay for them now.”
Brittany was speechless, but she kept trying to argue.
“Since my dad gives you all his money, you have to pay for them!” she argued.
“Why else would he give you money,
anyway?”
く
“So you can send it to your family?”
I didn’t know who filled her head with such
garbage.
“I’m not arguing with you,” I said.
“Go ask your dad for money.
“If he wants to pay for it, he will.”
I knew he’d only bought her the phone.
A phone was just a few hundred bucks.
Art lessons cost thousands, plus materials.
く
Brittany wasn’t stupid, she had to know.
Over the next few days, she realized I’d
cancelled all her lessons and tutoring.
She freaked out and yelled at me, but I
ignored her.
I just told her to wait for her dad to come
home.
She hated me, so she needed to get over it,
because I was through trying to please her!
Of course, that only lasted a few days.
She’s addicted to her phone now.

People will do anything to get out of work.
