Chapter 11
David was always traveling.
Lately he was never home.
My mother–in–law tried to start fights with
me, but I just ignored her.
I didn’t want to waste my breath since I was
getting divorced.
And when Aunt Carol stole a bracelet my mom gave me, I called the cops.
The cops checked the security cameras and
<
saw my mother–in–law helping Aunt Carol
steal it.
I refused to drop the charges.
But, it was hard to prove theft since it was
family.
In the end, Aunt Carol gave back the bracelet, got a slap on the wrist, and promised not to do it again.
I had officially burned every bridge with David’s family.
Two days later, David finally came home.
L
He looked like he’d been relaxing, not working
hard.
He was a bit chubby and looked and smelled
greasy.
I gave him the divorce papers.
He frowned.
“Sarah, this is too far,” he said.
“You’ve been breaking things, fighting with
my mom, and calling the police,” he
continued.
“I’ve put up with it because you’re such a
く
good stepmom, but you’ve gone too far this
time.”
“Brittany said you cancelled her lessons. She
needs those to get into Yale!”
I nodded.
“Yes, I did,” I said.
“Because she’s not my daughter!”
Honesty is always the best policy.
David was speechless.
He was about to start guilt–tripping me, but I
<
beat him to it.
He stood there with his mouth open, unable
to say a word.
“The classes are all publicly available,” I
continued.
“You can sign her up yourself.
“Here’s all the tutor’s contact info. Call them
yourself!”
I copied all the tutor’s numbers into his phone.
“By the way,” I finished, “sign these divorce
く
papers.
“Or don’t. I can wait a couple years, and it’s
not like I don’t know how to get what I want.
Until I walked away, David stood there frozen,
completely dumbfounded.
I knew it.
I was paying for his life.
