Chapte 5
When I got home, David, who was supposed to be out of town on business, was chilling on
the couch.
<
He must have gotten a call from his ex.
Before this, he was “too busy” to even come to Brittany’s party.
But Michelle only had to whine that he wasn’t paying enough attention to his daughter, and he was on the first flight back.
“Daddy’s little girl,” I thought bitterly.
Brittany saw her dad and ran into his arms.
David stroked her hair.
“I’m sorry, honey,” he said, all soft and
comforting.
<
“I couldn’t make it to your party. It was my
fault.”
“To make up for it, what do you want? Daddy
will get it for you.”
Brittany gave me a look, like, *watch this.*
She batted her eyelashes at her dad.
“I want the new iPhone, and I want to keep
taking art lessons.”
David looked at me, waiting for my approval.
I didn’t stop him.
く
“You’re her father,” I said, all sweetness and
light.
“You make the call.”
I only let Brittany have a basic phone for
emergencies and a tablet for school.
She couldn’t handle having a smartphone.
She’d skip meals and stay up all night glued to the screen.
As for the art lessons, she’d been taking them
for six years.
But she was still terrible.
く
I pulled the plug because she was starting
high school.
Instead, I paid for private tutoring, which
helped her grades skyrocket.
But she accused me of being controlling, of
turning her into a robot.
So I’m done.
I’m going to do whatever she wants.
Just as long as *I* don’t have to pay for it.
David didn’t say anything, and Brittany started to get an attitude.
<
“Dad, why do you always have to look at her
like that?” she whined.
“It’s not her money. Why does she even
care?”
I laughed.
“Oh, I don’t,” I said.
“As long as your dad’s footing the bill, I
couldn’t care less.”
Did she really think David was paying for her education?
Her tutoring and extracurriculars cost over
Г
Her tutoring and extracurriculars cost over
ten grand a year.
Could David afford that?
If it wasn’t for me spending my time and money, driving her to a million appointments, she wouldn’t have been at the top of her
class.
