- 7.
“John!” I called out when I saw him peering
into rooms.
He rushed over.
“Anna, are you alright?”
“I heard you collapsed.”
“I’m fine now, John. Thank you,” I said, seeing
his genuine concern.
“We’re colleagues. It’s what we do.”
David glared at John the entire time.
Suddenly, he spoke, his voice dripping with
sarcasm.
“Anna, is this why you won’t come home?”
“Found a new boyfriend already?”
1
Furious, I snapped, “David, don’t be
ridiculous! John’s my colleague!”
John seemed to just notice David.
“Anna, who is this?”
“I’m her husband. I’m here to take her home,”
David interrupted.
John looked at me, confused.
“John, don’t listen to him. I barely know him.
I’m not going anywhere with him!”
David’s face darkened.
“Anna, I’m losing my patience. Stop this.”
“I came all this way. Do you really want to
keep this up?”
I met his gaze, my voice ice–cold.
“David, my patience is wearing thin, too. Go
back where you came from!”
“And I’m not ‘keeping this up.‘ I don’t want
anything to do with you.”
His face turned thunderous.
Just when I thought he’d explode, a figure
stepped in front of me.
“Sir, Anna said she doesn’t know you. Please
leave and let her rest.”
David stepped towards John. “Who do you
think you are, telling me what to do?”
He turned back to me. “Anna, after your IV,
come with me. I’ll forget all about this.
Otherwise…”
“Otherwise what?” I cut him off.
“David, this is Alaska, not your personal
playground.”
“I was trying to keep things civil for old times‘
sake, but you’re pushing it. Don’t make me do
this.”
He scoffed. “Anna, you’ve grown quite a
backbone in a few months.”
“Let’s see how you plan on ‘doing this‘.”
I simply smiled. “David, I believe you’re up for
promotion to Major soon, aren’t you?”
“If I report you for improper conduct with
another officer’s sister, do you think you’ll still
get it?”
He stared at me, dumbfounded.
“Anna, are you threatening me?”
I snorted. “David, are you allowed to threaten
me, but I can’t threaten you?”
“Anna, do you really think I’ll leave you no
matter what you do?”
His words made me want to laugh.
He was the one who’d taken me for granted,
stomping on my heart because he knew I
wouldn’t leave.
“David, please, leave me. I’m begging you,” I
said, meeting his shocked gaze.
