Chapter 3
Zane returned.
Just as I was about to head out.
He walked into the room, dragging his suitcase while on the phone.
I looked at his familiar face, feeling nothing at all.
“Things are starting to move forward. Celeste, our other friends, and I are all very focused on this. The location will be at Celeste’s Pack, and everything is right on track.”
He placed his suitcase down, continuing to talk about work as he walked past me.

I frowned, giving him a quick glance.
Celeste–it sounded so familiar the way he said it.
“This won’t affect my work at the hospital, it’ll just be a bit busy. Would you like to join us? That’s great, Celeste will be thrilled. There’s a position that just opened up.”
Zane instinctively nodded, looking quite pleased.
After finishing his work call, he hung up.
I avoided his gaze and left the room.
Unexpectedly, he suddenly called out to me:
“Marlowe, are you heading to work? Let’s go together”

I stood there momentarily, feeling a bit out of place.
Even though Zane and I hadn’t seen each other for just a few days, my father’s passing made it feel like forever since I last saw him.
Hearing him speak in his usual tone felt strangely out of place.
But since we haven’t brought up the divorce yet, I didn’t want to make things too tense.
Otherwise, we’d be unable to even speak to each other.
I nodded and agreed.
Sitting in the passenger seat, I opened the window to air out the strong scent of Celeste that filled my nose.

Unexpectedly, as the car was leaving the neighborhood, we happened to encounter Celeste.
She was standing alone on the side of the road, her car parked right by her side.
Zane stopped in front of her and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“My car suddenly broke down. Zane, could you give me a ride? I’ve already called a tow truck.”
Zane agreed without hesitation, not considering my thoughts at all.
Celeste’s gaze lingered on me from outside the car, her expression apologetic.
“Sister–in–law, could you move to the back seat? I get carsick and usually sit in Zane’s

passenger seat.”
I frowned and smiled.
Get used to it?
Her words felt odd, like a challenge, daring to speak so boldly.
This time, Zane, for some reason, spoke up: “Celeste, bear with the back seat for now; it’s inconvenient to switch around.”
But I directly countered him, “It’s fine, go ahead and sit. It’s just a seat.”
I smiled, got out from the passenger seat, and moved to the back seat.
Celeste looked pleased, but Zane frowned, his expression seemingly a bit awkward.

I reminded him that if he didn’t drive soon, we’d be late for work, so he finally started the
car.
There was a similar incident once before.
Back then, Celeste had just joined our Pack hospital.
After work, Celeste had asked Zane to give her a ride home.
So, the three of us went down to the parking basement together.
Celeste quickly made her way to the passenger seat and sat there as expected.
Out of courtesy, even if I was displeased, I wouldn’t say anything in front of her.
Once home, I argued with Zane.

I told him the passenger seat had special significance. Why should Celeste sit there?
He sternly criticized me for being unreasonable:
“It’s just a seat. Why are you so particular about it?
“Besides, Celeste is new at the hospital. What’s wrong with giving her a break?”
Giving a break?
At this rate, I’d be giving her my position as his wife.
His attitude made me choke up, feeling he didn’t care about me.
But now I realize, it really isn’t worth getting

so worked up over just a seat.
I turned my head to look out the window.
Celeste up front kept chatting away.
“Zane, that place we went to last time, I thought it was so romantic and fun. We should go again sometime!”
She sounded shy, her words even carrying a flirtatious tone.
Anyone would think she was Zane’s wife.
Not only was she sitting in the passenger seat, but she was also naturally chatting with him.
Unfortunately, this time Zane didn’t seem interested in chatting.

He responded with a simple “mm–hmm,” and focused on driving.
Celeste tried hard to make her presence felt, constantly seeking conversation.
Zane didn’t say a word, only asking me:
“Honey, did you have breakfast?”
His calling me “honey” made me pause, even silencing the chatty Celeste.
He had never called me “honey” before.
I nodded, responding coolly:
“Yeah.”
This time, it was me who was distant, not wanting to engage with him.
