I wanted to see Garrett’s reaction to the
truth, so I lingered, unwilling to return to my
body.
Lily’s surgery was a success. Only then did
Garrett seem to remember me, pulling out his
phone and calling.
It rang for a long time without an answer.
I saw him frown; he thought I was throwing a
tantrum again. But this wasn’t a tantrum.
He went straight to Lily’s ward and waited for
her to wake up.
That’s when Taylor burst into the room and
slapped Garrett across the face
our pre-
planned scene for realism.
Garrett was stunned.
“Ha! Using Sarah’s heart to save your first
love, you monster!”
Taylor, red–eyed, screamed, then left with my
“remains.”
Garrett was frozen. After a while, he grabbed
Lily’s doctor.
“Tonight, the one brought in from the
accident… what was her name?” He
struggled to speak.
“A friend of Dr. Taylor’s. She said her name
was Sarah. Such a shame. I heard it was her
birthday.” The doctor shook his head.
Garrett paused, then doubled over, vomiting.
“How could it be her? She was waiting for me
at home to celebrate her birthday!”
“She was only twenty–four! Doctor, why
didn’t you save her?!”
I heard Garrett’s hysterical screams, his
frantic dash towards the operating room.
The doctor called security to restrain him and
gave him a sedative.
But nothing could affect me anymore. I
floated out of the hospital.
“If you don’t go back, your body’s going to
smell,” Taylor said to the air.
I floated, watching Taylor efficiently
“cremate” me in a single night.
me
“Even if Garrett comes looking, he’ll only find
your ashes.”
“So, what’s in the urn?”
“Baby formula.”
“Oh.”
I touched my chest; my new heart beat
stronger.
“Go, go, go! Your bags are packed, right?
Let’s go now!”
“You go first. I’ll wrap things up and be right
there.”
I escaped that night to the country I’d
arranged beforehand.
