“You messed with the wrong people, you
deserve this!”
Then came endless slaps, one after another.
I endured the excruciating pain, silently
counting in the dark.
Nine hundred and ninety–nine slaps!
I was thrown on the floor like a rag doll, and
they left.
I didn’t see their faces, but I was sure the one
who spoke was Jackson’s bodyguard.
Jackson, you were so quick to avenge
Jessica…
Lucky’s and my lives meant less than a strand
of Jessica’s hair?
I went to the hospital for treatment. The nurse
saw my injuries and offered to call the police.
く
I refused. Jackson was powerful, calling the
police would only target insignificant pawns.
I buried Lucky in my garden and stayed in a
hotel.
After two weeks of confinement, I went to a
bar with some friends.
Jackson, don’t think I can’t live without you.
As I kissed a guy’s hand, Jackson and Jessica
walked in.
He glanced at me briefly and went to the
dance floor.
The spotlight fell on them.
“Kiss! Kiss!”
Everyone cheered, and Jessica shyly looked
up at Jackson. “Jackson…”
Before she could finish, he kissed her.
I lost interest and went to the restroom.
Jessica followed, looking at me in the mirror.
“Scarlett… seeing your fiancé kissing me
must be awful…”
く
“Jackson really loves me. When I got a
tetanus shot, he let me bite his arm so I
wouldn’t be in pain…”
“Oh, your face is swollen, did you get into a
fight?”
“I heard your dog died, good riddance. It
deserved it for biting me!”
She always tried to take what was mine, and I
was used to it, but not Lucky!
Images of Lucky flooded my mind, and I
lashed out.
But Jackson stopped me, and I saw the bite.
marks on his arm. I froze.
He then pushed my face into the sink.
“Scarlett, I won’t allow you to hurt Jessica!”
I admit, I envied Jessica at that moment.
The water washed over me as I cried.
Then, two angry men rushed toward Jackson,
holding something sharp.
“Jackson, you’re dead!”
<
“Jackson, you’re dead!”
Jackson pulled Jessica into the crowd. I was
held at knifepoint.
“Damn! Jackson got away, but this woman is
his fiancée. Killing her is revenge enough!”
Before I could explain, a sharp pain shot
through my back, and the world went dark.
Jackson was gone.
I woke up, and Jackson showed rare remorse.
“Sorry, I got you involved…”
“Don’t worry, I won’t let you suffer for
nothing.”
I closed my eyes, remembering him running
away with Jessica. She was the only life that
mattered. I was merely a shield.
“I was… a good shield, wasn’t I…”
I mumbled. He didn’t seem to hear.
“What? What did you say?”
I didn’t answer. Jackson, this is my last time
tolerating your abuse. This heart is dead.
く
Seeing my silence, he left. “I’ll buy you
something to eat. Rest, I’ll…..”
I painfully got up and went to the rooftop. A
Hayes family helicopter waited.
Jackson returned with food, feeling anxious.
He didn’t know what I liked, so he got what
Jessica liked.
But I wasn’t there. He felt uneasy. He had
dealt with the threat, but seeing me covered
in blood, he panicked. My sudden
disappearance unnerved him.
He rushed to the Song house. Richard was
talking to Jessica. Seeing him, he eagerly
gave Jessica’s hand to Jackson.
“Jackson, I entrust Jessica to you!”
Jackson frowned, wondering what that meant.
He was looking for me.
“Mr. Song, I’m looking for Scarlett…”
“She left the hospital while still in danger…”
Richard patted his shoulder.
“Don’t worry about Scarlett, the Hayes family
already took her to Chicago. Your wedding is
off…”
Jackson couldn’t believe his ears. Scarlett
was his fiancée!
Chapter 2
Jackson frowned, a strange ache in his chest.
His heart belonged to Jessica, yet hearing I
was marrying someone else left him hollow.
Jessica, noticing his distress, felt a pang of
jealousy.
She caressed his chest, gazing at him
intently.
