Relieved, he grabbed his clothes.
Suddenly, he stared at me on the bed. “Sarah, put your clothes on.”
I pulled the sheet, half–covering myself.
“I’ll have to take them off later; it’s a hassle.” His voice was husky, “Put them on, be good.” I stared at him, silently resisting.
Finally, he conceded, whispering through the door, “Bro, Sarah’s tired.”
Then, adding, “She’s asleep. I’ll wake her for dinner.”
The knocking stopped.
After a while, a voice said, “Let her rest.”

Jake returned, sternly covering me with the
blanket, holding me like a cocoon.
That put a stop to things.
I closed my eyes, content in his arms.
Perhaps because of Jake, I dreamt of the day
before his mission.
He came home, and I was asleep on the
couch.
Feeling myself being lifted, I opened my eyes
and saw his tender expression.
He hadn’t expected me to wake up, saying
awkwardly, “Go to bed; you’ll catch a cold.”
As he put me in bed and turned to leave, I
grabbed his shirt.
“Jake, we’ve been married for five years. Is
this how you want to spend our lives?”
After a long pause, he whispered, “I know. I’ll
<
divorce you.”
“But I don’t want a divorce. Jake, can we
forget about your brother and live our lives?”
He was shocked.
After a moment, he refused.
I didn’t sleep that night.
Before dawn, I sent him a long message,
confessing my love.
He didn’t reply.
When I woke up, Jake was gone.
He left a note, saying he had an emergency
mission, starting at dawn.
I thought he’d see my message after the mission.
I’d waited so long, a couple of days wouldn’t matter.
But I only received news of his death.

During the mission, while checking for
stragglers, he was ambushed.
When rescue arrived, he was beyond
recognition but still held the attacker.

“Sarah! Sarah!”
I opened my eyes to Jake, his brow furrowed,
troubled.
“Jake…” My voice cracked.
My brow furrowed too.
“What did you dream about? You were crying
and calling my name.” He touched my face.
I realized my face was wet with tears.
His touch felt so real.
He wasn’t lifeless and disfigured, but a living,
younger Jake.
I looked at him, silently sobbing.

Last time, Jason was our biggest obstacle.
Jake was inherently conservative, even
knowing my feelings, he couldn’t accept our
relationship.
God must have given us a second chance.
Thank goodness it’s not too late.
“Jake, I dreamt you left me in the rain.”
Jake was speechless.
That evening, it was still raining.
When Jake called Jason for dinner, I received
a message from an unknown number:
“Sarah, something came up; I have to leave.
I’ll apologize later with dinner.”
My eyelids twitched.
Jason shouldn’t have my number, yet he
messaged me openly.
What did he want?
