Once Samuel was gone, I brought David inside. I didn’t want Lucas to hear our
conversation, so I let him play outside.

“Why not? I’ve fixed everything! I love you,
and you love me…”
“I don’t love you anymore.” I interrupted him. “David, after learning you lied for six years, that you let another woman raise my son, my feelings for you died. Take Lucas and go. I’ll send child support payments every month.”
“No! I’m not leaving!” He pulled me into a desperate hug. “Please, Evelyn, come home with me. I’ll make you my wife. We’ll be a family.”
I pushed him away, disgusted. “I said it’s
over. That night we were together…it was a mistake.” The biggest mistake of my life. If
we’d never slept together, would things have
turned out differently? But there were no do-
overs. I had to accept the consequences.

“I can’t live without you! I love you!” His eyes
filled with tears.
“No, you don’t. David, you’re selfish and a good actor. You seem like you love someone, but you don’t love anyone. You just like having someone around.”
