Chapter 12%
“Thanks.” I cut him off. “I’m really glad to have you as a friend. And honestly, I’m lucky you showed up in my life again.“|| Henrik clearly had more to say, but when I interrupted, he just fell silent.X
We weren’t at work, so the atmosphere wasn’t as tense. We caught up, talking about life after we parted ways.
Henrik was still the same–always exceptional. Whether here or outside the states, he was at the top of the food chain.
We used to be side by side, walking the same path.
I stared blankly at my glass. Now, the gap between us was undeniable.
I knew my choices were what led me here. My mistakes were mine alone.
“Yvonne, don’t worry. Your problems are my problems. I’ll make sure Heston pays for what he did.”
After two drinks, I was already tipsy X
I let out a soft laugh. “And who are you to me? I’ll make them pay with my own hands.”
For my baby’s life!
“Well, well, isn’t this my dear sister–in–law? Not cooped up at home? Out here picking up male escorts now?” The club music pounded through the floor, but Wendolene’s voice cut through it all, sharp and clear.X
I leaned on my hand and tumed to look. Wendolene was here with two female coworkers, all out for drinks. The esteemed Mrs. Fitzhugh hasn’t shown up to work for over two weeks. Rumor has it they got divorced. Wonder if it’s true?”
“Wendy, you’re still calling her sister–in–law? Guess that means the divorce rumors are false?“N
Wendolene took her time answering, letting their gossip drag out. Then she smiled and dropped the bomb. “No, it’s true. But if my dear cousin finds out you’re out here picking up guys, he’s gonna be pissed.”
I lazily shot back, “So what? We’re already divorced.”
So Wendolene and her big mouth had already spread the news around the office.
I looked her over. She was wearing the necklace Heston had given her, a dress that was the exact same as one wear, and on her feet–those custom–made crystal heels.
A perfect fit. So they really were meant for her.
Wendolene clicked her tongue. “Girl, you’ve got no shame. Just got divorced and already out here chasing men.”
In the dim light, she hadn’t gotten a good look at Henrik. She thought he was some club worker.
I smirked. “Better than some people. At least I didn’t knowingly play the side chick.”
Her face went red, but she didn’t want to cause a scene in front of her coworkers, so she dragged them away.!!

Henrik watched me, his gaze complicated. “I don’t get it. Affer everything she did to you, why did you let her live in your place??
“Maybe I was blind?“%
I laughed it off and took another sip of my drink. “I felt bad for her, you know? Tried to be good to her. But some people are just born ungrateful. Bite the hand that feeds them.”
I reached for another drink, but he took the glass away.
“You’ve had enough.”
I raised an eyebrow. “What, scared I’ll rack up a bill I can’t pay?”
He frowned. “Once you’re feeling better, I don’t care how much you drink–I’ll be here. But not tonight.”
He wanted to understand my life, not watch me drink myself numb.
Maybe I really was drunk, because I swore I heard Heston’s voice.!!
Yvonne

11 knew, his face was inches from mine. His grip was firm as he pulled me up.
“Come with me”
Another hand grabbed my wrist. “Let go of her.”
My head was spinning, the alcohol making everything hazy. My skull throbbed X
“Let Me Go “I
Hennik was stronger. He pulled me into his arms and stared coldly at Heston !!
“Yvonne has nothing to do with you anymore.”
The dim lighting worked against Heston. He took one look at Henrik and assumed he was a male escort.
1038 AM c
He let out a cold laugh. “Oh, calling her Yvonne now? What’s your club name? I’d like to file a complaint.”
He never expected someone to actually fight him for me.!!

Wendolene strolled back over, her expression full of fake concern.!!
“Tonny, your dear ex–wife is completely wasted. If you hadn’t come, they’d probably be in bed by now.“!!
A proper homewrecker always knew when to stir shit up and when to play the sweet girl.
For her, securing benefits would always come first. But, of course, she wanted the man too.!
Heston’s anger flared. He tried to rip me away from Henrik
I glared at him through my drunken haze. “Get. Lost,”
Henrik smelled like pine–cool, crisp, and a little intoxicating.
My face pressed against his neck, and I took in the scent.”
Heston’s rage barely stayed in check. He reached for me again, this time with a softer voice.”
“Yvonne, I’m your husband. Come on, let’s go home!“!!
